Build Sheet, Sloan Documentation, or Both?

    Hello, everyone...

I have a couple of '70 GS 455 cars I am considering having the Sloan Museum document for me; however, I do have the build sheet for one of the cars. Does the Sloan material contain info that might not be listed on the build sheet? Would it be worth the expense to go ahead and document this car through Sloan?

    Thanks for any input,

    Jamie,
Sloan's documentation will basically list all the options the car came with and will include the Dealer Number of the company that originally bought it.

I am the guy that decodes the buildsheets. Depending on which type of buildsheet you have, it will list most, if not all of the options, but will not have the original buyer info. The buildsheets also give you an idea of how the components were assembled on the cars.

Both types of "documentation" are important, and the one will help verify the other. I guess it all depends on what info is important to you, and whether you want to have a nice representative copy of the info to display at a car show.

Unless the cars were built from August- Nov 69 (approx.) Sloan does not have your records.

    Duane,

I thought the dealer name and address along with the dealer zone code were listed on all non-Flint style build sheets.

    Jamie,

The one thing the Sloan info would tell you is if your car was ordered by one dealer and sold by another. I have seen this many times on Sloan info.

I think that is true for Flint cars. I had Sloan document a 70 455 Conv. built in Freemont, May 70.

Mike, I have seen that on sheets of non-Flint cars.

Wayne's info showed my GSX being invoiced 3 times before it was sold.

    Mike Trom,
You are correct all non-Flint built cars will have the dealer name and address along with the dealer zone code listed on the large GMAD build sheets.

Only the Flint cars will not show that, on the Production Order Body Final build sheets. (I am too used to decoding Flint cars, can't you tell?)

Thanks for all the replies! If I'm not mistaken, one of these cars is an April '70 build from the Fremont plant. The other is a June '70 assembly (according to the cowl tag) from a plant in Missouri. I thought I would give them a try with Sloan to see what info they have.

Mike, you did a window sticker for me on the Fremont car some time ago. I thought it might be nice to have the have the Sloan documentation as well. It was originally sold at Denver Buick in Colorado, I believe.

I do have the Protect-O-Plate with the June car. Apparently, it was sold new at Frank Davis Buick in Nashville, TN (somehow, the GMAC paperwork survived also). I haven't been able to decipher all the P-O-P info, though. Where's the best place to look to help decode a P-O-P? The assembly manual has offered some help, but there are still some codes for which I can't seem to find a key.

I believe only Wayne Roberts, not Sloan, has the records for your cars.

Thanks for the additional info...I found Wayne Roberts' number from another link on the board. Was he a a Buick employee at one time? How did he collect all the documentation info?

Other pages I have referenced here at the V-8 Board say that Sloan may have VIN info through those ending on or about 193XXX. Any idea if this is correct?

Also, Duane...was there a Kansas City, MO plant, or was the Leeds plant the same one? The cowl tag states "KAN" on the June car.

I believe Wayne might have found the microfiche them at a flea market but do not hold me to that.

    Jamie,
Supposedly Wayne Roberts found the microfilm at a flea market and purchased it. He has the info for the last half of the Flint model year. I do not know if he has info for other plants.

I don't know where the breakdown is for the Sloan info, but I believe they have a website that lists what 70 info they have.

Leeds was one of the production plants that built 70 GS/Skylarks, but they stopped making them at the end of 70. I have some info that says Leeds Mo. and some that says Leeds Ks. I never bothered to check geographical locations.

Your Leeds buildsheet is a large GMAD sheet (Chevy style) and will list every code needed to completely build your car. It is basically a "blueprint" for your car. Flint buildsheets have a lot less info, but they only built Buicks there, so they did not need to code everything like at the other plants.

I would be interested to know if the gap in the 70 model records for the Flint plant production is not present for cars produced at other plants. When you get a definitive answer please post.

Thanks - Duane and Jim - for the clarification. I e-mailed Sloan yesterday after visiting their site and am still awaiting a response. If I find anything definitive about the breakdown of Sloan's archives, I'll post it here.

Leeds plant was on the Missouri side in Kansas City.

    More on the Sloan Museum

Below is the reply that Jeff Taylor, curator of collections at the Sloan Museum, sent to me. Perhaps this will help clarify some things for everyone.

    ___________________________

    Mr. Carnes,

Sloan Museum has information on most all 1970 Buicks. What we are missing is information on Flint-built cars with serial numbers higher than 193552. So, yes, the last six digits of your VIN will tell us if we can help you, but we also need to know where the car was built. Flint-built cars are denoted by the letter "H" in front of the last six digits.

For a charge of $40, we will break down the last six digits and send information on the options that those numbers stand for. In some cases, we can tell you the name of the dealer the car was sent to. Basically, you will know all the options that your car had when in left the factory.

If we do not have your information, Wayne Roberts of Troy, Michigan, can help you out. He can be reached at 248-879-2113. Like us, he charges for his services, but I am not sure of his fees.

If you want us to search your VIN, I will need a check mailed to the address below, or you can call or email me with a Visa or MasterCard number.

I hope this information helps. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Any chance of finding any info on a '71 GSX from anyone at Sloan?

The answer to that is no, I also have a 71 GSX and have been hoping that info would pop up somewhere.
