buick and olds were about equal in power ,but my experence with these engines . say,s the olds is tuffer and last longer. i know a few guy,s tha have built some pretty fast buick,s and i like buicks too.man thst 430 was a beast , i had a customer that had a 79 electra 225 that had a 68 wildcat 430 in it and we used to kill those t.p.i irock cameros in the day . and i built a 79 cutlass that had a sorry 260 old,s in it and i went to a selfserve wrecking yard and found a 67 olds toronardo 425 engine that was rated at 385 horsepower. boy thas car was quick and it was a peg leg rear end. i had to use a 74 monte carlo radiator and cut the core support a little to get it to fit right .no headers just a good tune-up. put a 403 olds in a 82 regal ,that was fast. i like a buick .i bought one for 40.00 a 1970 225 ,decent car strong engine. i found out later that , for on the cheap a 1973 and up timing cover is what you need , that will help ,but if she runs hot a few times .and you don,t rebuild the oil pump you will be walking soon . my buddy in cali has a 70 gs 455 stage 1 and he says, that with a mildly ported set of heads ,and a change of pistons and a [hemi killer]cam some 4;10 gears headers . alum.intake. reworked quadrajet. 400 trans wait shift kit and mild stall he rund lo 12, sec. thats real decent .thats just a little work annd he say,s the 4.10 wind out pretty fast and you go up in smoke . me i respect that car but give me a mopar first or a olds then a buick and poncho

You won't find any issues with Olds or Pontiacs out here. The Buick 455 is a tough engine, but does new a few upgrades if you are trying to make it last in a performance enviroment. 400HP and 510lbs and the engine will last all day every day. That is basically a stock 1970 with headers and cam. If you do some port work it will go up from there.

For most street applications you can't beat the torque of the BBB. Also if you are not going over 5500 RPM it will last a looooooooooooong time.

The V6 and the 350 are tougher engines. The V6 has a lot of performance goodies at the moment. The 350 is a little behind, but can be made to go like hell if you port the heads, add headers and tune it right.

When I get my heads done I will go W31 hunting.:beer

ha,ha you really think that old 350 bueford will hold up to a olds, and talking about w-31 hiunting ? i,ll tell you what .,run across a 330 olds and you will see that a 350 buick is a joke . those olds engines were built with forged crankshaft,s & rods .high-compression.and a good oiling system . on the road i bet that your buick will blow-up quickly. any one think i,am lying ?

No, I think you just suffer with bad punctuation, spelling and perhaps a personality disorder.

If you'd like, we can compare my Olds 350 and Buick 350 buildups to yours...you first.

Post your weight, ET/MPH and what you had to do to get there. Are you up for it, or did you lose all your timeslips? Or perhaps you never had any? You do have to have been down the track at least once to get one, you know.

hey guy,s i,am new at typing and sometime i don,t check my spelling . but i mean well. i like the buick,s the old,s the poncho,s and the mopar engines .[318] they were not that powerful but they could take a lot of abuse . small block chevy? i think over-rated. they don,t hold up to a lot of abuse. but they are good training engines. you,ll learn the basics working on a chevy engine & that will take you a long way,s in the auto repair business. i started my first job working with some chevy freaks.they built stock cars and raced at santa-fae speed way .they loved those 283,s 327,s 400, small blocks & 396/375 big blocks. i used to get those guys dander up by talking about the hemi. during that time ,late 60,s early 70,s the 426 [king kong] hemi was king at the track. and i would go to u.s 30 or union grove wis. and i would bet on the mopars, and win money. see i like a winning combo. and mopars were top dog in those day,s. at least in drag racing. but one of the best driving car,s at that time was the 1969 pontiac grand prix [428]sj it had decent handling . good power .and looked beautiful .well that was in 1969 . in 19 70the skylark g.s 455 stage 1 come out .and a guy that worked at a cleaners on madison& whipple street on chicago,s west side ,had a yellow one &it was beautiful. made the pontiac [judge] g t o look lame. but man those were the days .you could go to nicky chevrolet on the nort side [irving park&kostner] and get you a 427 or 454 nova for less that $3500.00 so at the place that i was working at [ bill,s texaco]on 735 s lamarie ave .a customer had a 69 gs 400& danny mullins had a 396/375 and the went at it. and danny just barely one.and he had a 4 speed ans some 4:10 in the rear. buick was a auto [400] trans .i have no idea what he had ,but i think it was stock.but if i had the cash i would build a buick &a olds just to see what amount of power i could get out of each combo. well guy,s i enjoy this site and i respect the buick and other engines ,cause dollar for dollar you can,t beat the power that an american engine can make . and p.s i ,guess a lot of you guy,s already know . the buick cathederal port head,s were ahead of it,s time . that basic designe is what the chevy boy,s use today, well everybody take care &have fun &god bless you and your familys

I'll bet this one will give you a run for your money. OH and don't forget I don't have all of that fancy equipment you just mentioned here with the forged crank and rods and high compression... and before you start to give me all of that stuff about the w31 and bla bla bla... ALL I got is stock parts. 350 Buicks don't even get all the best parts as other engines do. The only thing I got aftermarket is Intake, Headers, Forged pistons, Thats it.

Mine has been running for over 14 years now on my build up, been to the track every year since then. Drive it there and race there. 1 hour there and 1 hour back. I have also been running nitrous the last three years also. I can run a 12.0 with a pissy little 75 shot. Basically I am as fast as a w-31 Cutlass on my stock motor.

Oh yeah I forgot. I can take you in the twisties also. If you know what a HO-Racing suspension is I have one of those too...and this car aint even a GS. :blast:

We are mostly a bunch of of traditionalist here. The first letter in a sentence needs to be capitalized. To do that hold the shift key down and press the letter you need. A punctuation mark goes at the end of a sentence. There is no space between the word and the punctuation mark. After the mark you can use one or two spaces, just be consistant. Many of us are old to read anything without those conventions.

you really have no idea what you're talking about, do you? if you're Buick blew up, it was likely because you rebuilt it and had no idea what you were doing ( ie - you think Chevy is great for learning how to build engines ).

are you aware that the NASCAR Busch v6 engine ( which regularly pushed ~550hp ) is an outgrowth of the Buick v8? strength is not an issue for the SBB design, even if we have to make do with only two bolt mains.

you can talk about Buick's not getting forged parts or any other trick race stuff all you want. that's true.

which should make what we can do on stock parts all the more terrifying to you. if Buick had been given the same racing support that Chevy, Olds and Pontiac have had, there would be no comparison.

we have the lightest blocks and the best torque. if we had the quality pieces necessary to turn real rpm there would be no question who was boss.

I say cut the guy some slack. He seems harmless enough and looks to be a fellow car nut ...

... and not everyone types or spells with perfect grammar and punctuation. In fact, what if he never finished elementary school ?? who cares ?? does that make him less of a car nut and possible buick lover ?

Sorry, I don's have a lot of respect for someone who logs in under two user names and has a conversation with himself. Of course, I could be mistaken, but I still call it a duck...

Hi ,guys. Thanks for the writing lessons. I don,t mean to upset you guys with a lot of olds talk. And i did have the walter brinston [name] And i forgot my password. now i may not be as book smart as some of you guys. but i love old american cars ,&those torquey engines of the pass. Boy those were the good old days. Almost any car would smoke the tires in the 60,s. I have a friend , that had a 64 buick wildcat ,with the 425/445 engine. I think the 445 stands for the amount of torque the engine makes. well i,ll tell you one thine about that car .The engine was very smooth running. And we would take a glass of water and put on the air ckeaner, to see how smooth it ran Well the balancing of that engine was just as good as a lexus .And nail it from a stand still, and baby hold on. These new cars today are just too plastic ,and lack that torque that those cars made then. I may not sound to some of uoy guys like a dyed in the wool buick lover, but i love those old buicks. Not what they make today.A la cross. ha haha, a buick in name only. I met this guy herbert.had the 68 wildcat, and he would put a $20.00 bill on the dash a tell you to grab it .He never lost that $20.00 bill. The 430 biuck engine was,in my mind a little faster than the 455 in the quarter. At least thats the way i would see the outcome of the race ,between 2 brothers. Now at that time i did not know one had a 430,and the other had a 455. Maxi had a 69 duce, and his brother Vell han a 70 both ,very sharp white drop-tops. well the would line up on the side of the expressway ,and take off. The 69 would always win , by almost a car . Those cars could do some heck of a burn out. Big as they were. I know another guy that has a 78 regal that has a 430 in it. Very fast car. Well that,s all for now,and i pray that GOD bless your familys and you
