Broke a Promise

Well, I promised my wife that I was not going to buy a car at Mecum Indy where I am this week. Intended to just have fun watching others spend money and a lot of nice Buicks changing hands. Yesterday I broke my promise.

I was thumbing through a catalog of The Maryland Collection, 47 cars being sold at 'No Reserve' and noticed a 1921 Buick Touring car for sale. I walked to the display and was blown away by this wonderful car that had been restored over the years and looked awesome. In the back seat was a 3 ring binder full of the car's history including history back to early 60's, complete restoration receipts from 1979-80 and later by the renowned White Post Restorations of White Post, VA.

After reading about the car and work done I decided to check with a friend that knows early Buicks on pricing to confirm what I thought the car might be worth. We were both on the same page so I decided to bid on the car and after spirited bidding, I won the car. I am thrilled as it will be a fun car for family, shows, parades etc. Apparently there are very few 1921 Buicks left, especially in this condition. The car had been sitting in a 100+ car collection in Maryland for more than 10 years and after the passing of the father in 2017, the family decided to liquidate the collection, hence my lucky day.

Called the wife and explained what I had done, then sent photos and she forgives me since she loves the older, antique cars.

    Buicks forever :)

Assume we are talking about the red 67 Convertible. A friend and I looked it over very carefully and decided it was a genuine really nice car that won a bunch of awards in 2001 and then apparently has sat in storage since. It was not really prepped that well for the auction including the cloudy build up on the tires which would have taken someone 20 minutes to scrub or at least put some Armor All on them. I was thinking it may go low as cars before it were not bringing top dollar. If it got stuck in the 20's I was prepared to try to snag it, clean it up and then sell it but it sold for $43K due to a bidding war. That made mine $8000 cheaper and looking good. By the time the buyer added $4300 premium, plus maybe $1000 to ship it somewhere in Eastern half of US it is almost a $50K car. No doubt it is nice but mine came with more options and once I get the console in it the only significant option not on mine would be the reclining passenger bucket seat and head rests. Over all a very nice car and I have a photo of the cowl tag for Gary to log in on his list.

Now, I just need to enjoy the next two days and watch some beautiful cars cross the block.

Nice touring Chuck. Great color combo on it as well. Just give her the credit card and tell her to go have a spa day

That '21 is beautiful! I hope that you are a collector who drives his cars. I'm not a fan of antique cars just sitting in someone's garage. I love driving my T (very similar color combination).

John we will drive the 1921 car as I do with all my other cars but one. The 1932 Buick is a Concours quality restoration and we have had it all over the country to Concours and national meets where it has won almost every award possible. It is now for sale as we don't dare drive it and get paint chips, road rash and grime under and all over the car and we have had our fun with showing it and meeting so many neat people. I need someone who sees it and decides they must have the car like I did with the 1921 Buick.:D

Chuck —this is called a retaliatory purchase. I should know since my spouse was the person that invented it.
