Can somebody tell me which Headlight bulbs I should buy for my Wifes '93 Mercury so it can put out a brighter light. Not looking to switch to H.I.D. set-up and don't want any rainbows or halo effects. Just want to upgrade to a brighter get down the road further light.
    Thanks as always.

    Sylvania Silverstars

I've heard from various GN Owners that the Sylvania silverstars are the whitest and brightest without going to a HID system. Evans Ward in Macon (who owns a 70 GS and my old 87 Turbo T) just put them in the T and said they made a HUGE difference. I think they make these for our old Buicks too and I plan to get a set for my cars. Not cheap though. I think they are about $25 per light.

The new Sylvania SilverStars are a pretty good bulb and not too expensive. Another choice are PIAA Super Whites - expensive, but awesome bulbs. They didn't have that blue-ish color a lot of those bulbs have, just very white and bright. I think they were $70 a pair.

The Sylvania SilverStars are definitely a HUGE improvement over standard quartz sealed beam applications. As Alan said, I just put a set in my Turbo Regal and it now has illumination to rival my wife's Jeep Grand Cherokee! This is a plug n play sealed beam replacement. I will check into this set up for my GS too. BTW, the light appears bright white and doesn't have a blueish tint. If you're after that blue tint look, Sylvania makes a sealed beam replacement light called Cool Blues. There is also an ongoing rebate of $10 per pair on the SS's until a few months down the road. These lights work with stock systems and require no relays or modifications of wiring. Advance, Auto Zone, and Pep Boys are just a few of the vendors that carry these. Better lighting at night=better safety!

I wanted more light for my Dakota so I put on a set of Hella 7" round 100 watt pencil beam off road lights. These lights overpower the factory 120 watt high beams. They are in fact so bright that the reflection from road signs blind me. I don't run them when there is the possibility of oncoming traffic.

Funny, I wasn't terribly impressed with the silverstars. Not only did they have a noticeably blue tint, they were DIMMER than the Sylvania Xtravisions. I suppose the bulb itself might have been brighter, but the Xtravision did a far superior job of lighting up the garage.

Both lights were tested on the same vehicle, one on each side... I blocked one, then the other to compare.
