Long story - the short one is that I followed the internet advice and did a factory reset on my Samsung S5. No one said that the Factory Reset Protection (FRP) was in place and DON'T DO IT! Asked for a SAMSUNG account ID and password - WTF. Its a 2014 and I don't remember anything about that. Samsung says to take it to a service shop - he can't do anything. Anyone here know someone who can help or have advice? I hate to go buy a new phone.

I dont have an answer .. but i recently upgraded from an S5 to an S9 when my wife lost her phone (2 for 1 deal) and I dont miss the S5 one bit. Plus, with the S10 near release, the S9 prices should drop even more.

Second vote to go see your carrier. They have seen it all and know a thing or two about phones.

Verizon (carrier) was no help. And apparently Samsung does not have a master password - you are on your own. The Samsung service center, which charges $70, could not help and had no magic. Basically they were trying to hack in to remove the FRP. So the good news is that if your phone is stolen, no one else can use it. Bad news is that the number of stolen phones has not gone down????? Basically just use the stolen phone with the existing pics, files and apps!

How did you do the factory reset? Were you using the phone software from the settings menu, or did you do a hard reset by holding the volume up, power, and home buttons?

I haven't tried anything yet - the phone is still at the service center. He was supposed to try all the tricks....or they just want me to buy a new phone....

We are with Verizon and be sure you go to an Authorized REAL dealer. Most Verizon store are not the real thing anymore. We have 1 10 miles from our house and have to drive 45 miles each way to go to Verizon. They should of backed you up to the cloud before they did the reset. You lose programs I believe but can get them back from the app store. Your problem might be the age. I have the Galaxy S7 and am ready to chuck it but have no insurance on it. So next year when it is up for renewal I will shop around. Only problem is Verizon forces you to only use Verizon unlocked phones. And Yachtsmanbill will not switch carriers because of the flip phone issue. He doesn't text, email or surf on his phone. Phone is for calls only. Or so he says. I use mine for everything, even banking when I have to.

    Hi,

I did mine years ago, I have Sprint and had to go to a Sprint store not a franchise one. They made a few calls and asked for SOS, billing address etc and they got things working

    Regards,

Agree with Pat, make sure you're going to a real Verizon store. I've got one that looks legit a couple blocks away from my house, but it's some private "middle man" type store. They're no help other than to buy a new phone or change your plan. The real Verizon store is on the other side of town and can actually help with technical difficulties.

Yeah, I got the real store. I should have asked them to do it, but I did it myself. I LOVED my flip phone that I had for 18 years, right after I turned in my bag phone. Dang thing died (I dropped it) and left me stranded. My son had an extra (don't ask) S5 so I got that turned on for me. Did the reset to get rid of all his stuff on it. Should have done more research!

x2 on the xda developers forum. Real smart folks over there. They should be able to help or at least tell you whether you are screwed or not.

I've used info from the xda forums to root my last 4 phones that I've owned.

I'm on Verizon with a non-Verizon Google Pixel 2 that I bought straight from Google.

Thanks all for your advice - I will follow up with xda. Got out my wife's old Razr and am using it now - same SIM card too. I'll poke around when I have time.

Ahhh...Razr. Motorola fan in early years 'till Google bought 'em for their tech and resold to Chinese Lenovo...likewise have some laying around "just in case." Having to choose a replacement every 2+ years when hard-wired battery dies is major pain. No phone is worth $1K...
