Look how shiny those magnesium wheels looked when they were new!

I know...I got's to polish them sucker up when I re-paint the body bright-azz candy-apple red with heavy flake and real gold leaf lettering.
Bumpers just painted a straight silver with black accents around the grille & lights.

That's how I remember the car and that's how I want to restore it...:TU:

John, if the gold leaf is fresh, you might just seal it with clear and mask it off before you do the rest of the paint. No sense doing it over if you don't have to, and it could be pricey in this day of $1000/oz. gold. Just one less thing to do on the list.
You have my vote as far as a full restoration of the original paint job. All that "Patina" stuff doesn't really do it for me either. Some new candy paint with flake would really set the car off like it did when it was new.
On a side note, did Jim Hall bring the "vacuum cleaner" Can-am car with him? That car could go through the corners almost as fast as he could go run on the straights. He was way ahead of his time when it came to automotive engineering.
By the way, be very careful polishing those wheels. Magnesium was very light, but it also burns really HOT! Later, Randy

I dont know if you've seen it or nor, but here's a website that talks about restoring magnesium wheels.

    I like this quote-

Magnesium is dangerous. If it ever catches fire, throw a bucket of sand on it and run for your life. When magnesium burns, it virtually can't be stopped. Small quantities of magnesium are used to make photoflash bulbs. Larger quantities are used to make bombs.

    John,
I agree on the paint issue, I've done a couple matte finish paint jobs and a few semi gloss for guys and I will not do any more, I really hate the extra work involved for a job that just looks like your painter doen't look like he knows what he's doing....I hate it, one look at my 73 Triumph Bonneville will show what a paint job should look like and it's paint is going on 10 years old.
If you do decide to re gold leaf it I might be able to hook you up with Bob Spina (google him if you don't know who he is) I'd do your paint but you are all the way on the other side of the country....if I could swing it even that wouldn't stop me! At least then I'd be using my powers for good instead of evil(which is usually how that ends up)

Way back in Science Class in High School, the teacher took a small magnesium rod and lit it with the bunson burner. He had some home-made plyers that were close to 3 feet long. Coolest thing in the world. He dunked it underwater and pulled it back out. Still burning bright, and boiling all of the water around it.

Totally agree...the same amount of work & effort and it still ends up looking like crap.:Do No:

You look at those pictures of when it was new and it just looks so fresh & perfect, that's how I'd like to do it.

90% of the lettering is acceptable to me,the rest is over imperfections in the body (like over door seams) that would need to be totally redone.
I have seen gold leaf decals that looked pretty killer so I think I'll cross that bridge when I get there,I've got friends talking me into doing the mechanicals first and the body work/paint/lettering last and that really might make the most sense.

We'll see,but thanks again for all your comments and keep them coming!:TU:

    Merry Christmas guys,
    John

when i found it here in ct, the car was faded red. the guy said he found in a trailer in nj. when i first looked at it, the details of the car were amazing.
polishing the 'mag' wheels are not a problem. 'mag' fires are put out with abestos.

    still mad at my wife.....

Don't know if this had been previously posted, but here's a link to a place that's making a resin '67 GS model. Scroll down to it and it's also got several pics of Pellegrinis' other '67 funny car. Cool!

I wonder if John can send some pics of his car. Maybe they can do a set of decals for Ingenue as well as the Super Bird

    John,
Agreed on doing the mechanicals first as well, although you do have the option of doinf the body and setting it aside till you are ready for it....not an option for the rest of us. The car deserves to be put back to like new condition, I'm with you on how cool it would look with shiny new candy red paint. I didn't realize that the gold leaf was varigated gold leaf....I love that!! I'm going to be doing my 1972 Wizard lawn tractor in a green metalflake with gold leaf replacing it's decals....I alreadt got Moon to spin me up a custon set of disks for it too!

Now that is fricking wild...guess I don't need a model since I have the real thing, lol.:bla:

I've never seen a rear shot of Pelligrini's car, weird how he mounted the chute so high up on the trunk lid,and those look like regular cragger chrome wheels held on by lugs versus the spindle mount AR wheels on Ingenue.
