So I'm in Orielly's picking up an oil pressure sending unit (they had one in stock, wow) for the 70's 440 Dodge pickup my son bought and they had this Bosch ABS code reader on sale, cool...

So I buy it try it on three of my vehicles and it won't find anything, no ecm, no error message, nothing but it does power up. Go back to Orielly's and they tell me too bad we don't exchange, return or warranty electronic parts. Um, this is not an electronic part but a tool that you can only plug into the diagnostic link. You can't do anything else with it. "Too bad you now own a $115 paper weight."

Sent an email to Corporate. Keep you posted.

The store is referencing their policy with respect to expressed warranties. Most states have adopted a version of the Uniform Commercial Code that by operation of law grant an implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

Read the manual. Abs code readers are very limited. There is no generic code set for abs like the pcms. There is some chance it's not compatible with any of your cars.

I know in the great state of Maryland you have a 30 days, no questions asked return policy. Some packaged items/parts will list exclusions to that rule, ie; it has to be in the original-unopened package. Also know that you can't buy a CD or DVD and take it out of the wrapper and then expect to return it. Copyright violation or intellectual property could have been viewed, read, downloaded, etc. Of course you could buy a defective CD and they would return that...

As for your code reader, well...YMMV

As an assistant manager at an Oreilly's they where wrong. If it didn't work either it was a bad unit or just wasn't compatible with your vehicle. A return was warranted, period.
Sad to say some people at other stores are idiots.

I saw a code reader at Walgreens Drug Store a few days ago for $19.95. I am thinking about getting it.

Now guys I understand people are @## es and scam retail stores every chance they get but if I a customer who has used your place for ten years, has five vehicles I buy stuff for, has a rewards setup, a commercial account through my AC Business and walk out of your establishment with the scanner; it doesn't work at least exchange it.

Quite possible but to read the manual you have to open the package. Once you open it they will not return it. Tried it on four vehicles 96-97-02-06 and it would not communicate with any of them. It will power up but say no equipment found. Key on, key off, or running.

Well Tim customer service agreed with the manager and reiterated their policy is no return on electronics because people read their error codes and then return the unit. Auto parts stores will read it for free anyway so not sure why you'd buy it for a one time use.

Waiting on an answer from Bosch now.

Bosch will likely have you send it in for repair on your dime. Bosch/spx has likely the worst customer service ever. They are one reason i got out of the tool business.

Managers have a great deal of discretion. Any manager smart enough to be (and stay!) manager should see that, policy be damned, losing a good customer over a part that Bosch will warrant is stupid foolish. Ask him to exchange it and have him watch you unpackage and test the replacement in the parking lot. If it works, everyone is happy. If it doesn’t, he can’t really argue with you that it’s a piece o’ crap and should refund you.

Yep, I had an issue with a single hex Tee wrench out of a set that was part of a large (to me) tool set purchase. The clerk and area manager wanted me to return the set, and I said words to the effect that you DON'T want me to return the whole set... When the manager looked up the purchase order, he went and got an entire set of hex Tee's, and apologized for my inconvenience. (I guess that looking at a corporate account for a manufacturing facility had some bearing...)

If it doesn't work on any vehicle it is a bad unit. Have him test it on one of the delivery vehicles. If still nothing get the district manager and /or the regional manager involved. There numbers should be on a sign next to the front door. You could also call corporate customer service. You do have a bad unit. You shouldn't have to go to Bosch.
Don't know why you are having so much trouble, it is no skin off there nose to warranty the unit. It is sent back to the DC and the DC takes care of it.

Got the final word from Bosch. Basically they told me to bugger off too. The unit will not communicate with any ABS systems in my 1996, 1997, 2002 & 2006 vehicles. The screen powers up but there is no illumination so you need a flashlight to see it but it says no communication, just flat doesn't work. Bosch rep told me well there are rare exceptions where it can't see the ABS system. Okay so then why does the box not indicate that? I'm told "If you buy the more expensive hand held we promise it will read all cars post 1996 OBDII". Yea like Bosch is ever gonna get another penny of my money; so now I have a $110.00 paperweight.

So here is a pic of the box. I see no exceptions. Friggin jerks.
