My 70 Electra has 2.93 gears in the rear end where parts are made of unobtanium. Is there a direct bolt in rear end that I can swap gears in? I want to run 3.23-3.73 gears with a od so I can use a bigger cam in my deuce.

    Thank You

Best approach would be a Ford 8.8 take the center section out of both and plug the 8.8 in place provided the Electra is a 4 link which I believe it is. This isn't "Hard" any good fab shop could do it, ID expect to pay $2500 tho

Most custom made 9" housing and axles are about 1000 then another 1000 or so for a posi Thrid member with gear. Your steet driving you won't need all the major fancy cases and super large pinion bearing or major spline axles. Then you will also need a new rear brake setup, I think you can the large drum for 9" complete for 250ish new

That is a steep price for me. I'm looking for a posi rear from a salvage yard. Will the corporate 71-75 rear be a bolt in? I read that there is aftermarket parts available for those.

    No-
1965-1970 axle splines are different from 1971-1976 axle splines both are 31 but different pitch.

If you are talking about complete drum to drum swap ...Again No totally different mounting on the shock spring perch lower control arms etc. :(

Big old cars are tough to get performance parts for.

If the housing mounting is the same, you could transfer the other mounting locations easy enough, width may need to be adjusted tho, there again you will be over 2k time you buy the rear and labor to swap

I would just cruise the big car and buy something else to play with to be honest, your fighting a losing battle with a big car

Alaskabuick fabbed a late 70's ford full size 9" into his full size buick. The axle housing length was nearly the same, he just had to transfer the mounting brackets and driveshafts u-joints to make it fit.

Yah but a 9" I think you can do better. Unless your using a pro center on the 9" I deem them not any better than any performance stock rear from the factory.
You talking about a 4500+ car
You need a BIG pinion to deliver that power safely through the drive line.

If he is just cruise 9" will be fine...BUT it sounds like High performance driving is where he want to be.

Stock pinion 9" support will be the weak link and blow right out the front of the case when stickys are applied and a big torque hit.
I see it at the track all the time full spool 35 spline 9" with stock crappy third member and they chunk the support and oil washes the track and were all siting there waiting for hours for a clean up... cause they want to save a buck... please buy good parts if your going that route.

GM Pontiac/ Olds 9.3 would be a good way to go BUT everything is just so expensive...that is what the top fuel cars used in stock form back in the day before aftermarket stout parts.

What options exist that don't cost an arm and a leg or made out of pure unobtainium? Something with gear ratio choice, durability behind a big block and similar housing mounting locations and axle dimensions? The OP wants something with a 3.73 for use of an OD trans which is impossible to find in a Buick 9.3.

I have a rare 9.3" 3.42 posi from a Riviera GS for my Wildcat to replace the peg leg 2.79 currently in there, but if I want anything more aggressive, or I happen to break it, there is nothing to replace or repair it commercially available.

Get a group order going and ask Fabcraft to make a run of 66-70 Buick 9 3/8 get sets. The factory made 3.91 ratios as I recall.

You need a big group. They were making some gear sets for some of the full size rears, but I don't know which ones.
Could you start with a 12-bolt Chevy from a 60's-70's Impala, and modify the mounting brackets. That would give you parts availability for gears and units. The housings are also cheaper to obtain compared to an A-body.
    Jim,
Have you ever seen that 70 Electra 2-door running at Thompsons? I wonder what he is running.

Yes I know that guy with his 225 electra. I also talk with him and tell him when he thinks he is ready for a custom rear give a call.
I think he is still using his stock rear with not so great ratio and he still runs those numbers...LOL. 3.08 I think...
That motor is really stout... hes nutty...will not give up on the BIG CAr racing...

I wonder what the width difference is between your rear end and a GM 14 bolt from an old 3/4 ton truck. I have a few trucks with these rear ends and they are pretty durable... Sure you would have to replace the axles with versions with your lug pattern on it but thats not too bad and as with any swap you would have to move the suspension brackets over from your old rear. If it had to be shortened then it may not be worth it.

We make lots of car rears from the 14 bolt 9.5 GM truck rear... BUT we have limited it to leaf spring cars or Impalas cause we have not created the arch bar yet for the Upper control arms bolt up. ...
We put Moser 7900 or 7950 Billet ends I am sure we can get the 7850 end for the O/P ends which you can use their drum brakes. Most after spending this kind of money will just go disc brakes anyway . reason for gm small or Impala ends. You can use ford Torino ends they are popular for disc brakes too.

    Call Dave at FabCraft, 800-208-8242
He might have something for gears for your existing rear,or one that would be easier to swap.

You just missed a 9 3/8th 3.23 open rear on ebay about a month ago for 159.00. Seller was in Montana.

FabCraft has a extra thick ring gear 3.55 that will bolt right in to his existing carrier. just talked to him about a set for my 72 Pontiac.

Did you ever ID the rear under this Electra?
If it is stock it is 9 3/8 BUICK 10 bolt cover, 12 bolt ring gear, 30 spline bolt in axles...There are NO Aftermarket parts.

IF you some how have a Pontiac rear under the car...??? VERY DOUBTFUL, extremely Doubtful ... The Fabcraft gears 3.55 will fit the scalloped 10 bolt covered 12 bolt ring FULL SIZE Pontiac rear with 31 spline bolt in axles.

9 3/8 is just a dead horse :( It is not a BAD rear just no parts for it. What is in the junk yards and cars is all your going to get. Hit Craigslist hard...see what you can find.
Rivs will be the best tickets then wagons Electra, wildcat, rivs 1967-1970 (guts only) ................1966 is even worse as it is a ONE YEAR rear only!!!! same size carrier bearings so leave the 66 rears off your list UNLESS you obviously have a 1966 Buick full size car. THEN you will have the needle in the hay stack.
