I think 'best' depends on what you're looking to do with your car. Are you looking for just a nice driver, a street/strip car, something more drag oriented, or do want this to handle really good too? With a G-body, you have tons of options. As your car started with an Olds 307, the obvious and easiest upgrade would be to an Olds 350 or 403. If you had a non-AC car, I'd even mention the Olds 455. All of these options will work with your factory starter wiring. (Olds, Pontiac, and Series II Buick V6 were on driver's side.....older Buick, Chevy and Caddy are pass. side). Some of the other options using factory style frame/engine mounts would be Buick V6, Buick 350, or old school Chevy V8 (SB 350/383/400 or BBC). If you want to get into aftermarket frame mounts, you could do BB Buick (400/430/455), Cadillac 472/500, LSx series, or even a killer 3800 turbo V6 Buick engine. Overall cost and how much you're comfortable with modifying stuff will play into this. If this is a very low budget deal, I'd lean towards the Olds 350/403. I don't know what your options for junkyard or swap meet engines are down there. I'm upstate from you and either have or can get any engine mentioned above. For most of the streetable type engines, I'd recommend a beefed up 200-r4 tranny. No matter what you choose, a sturdier rear end will need to be found. That stock 7.5" one in there isn't going to cut it for very long.
upstate huh? thats not to bad a drive, could u let me know if u come across any olds 350s or 403, sbc seems to be all we have down here
Don't need aftermarket mounts. The frame is designed to accept any of the available engines. That means frame pads from a Monte will allow a sbc to drop in, frame pads from a 307 car allow you to use any Olds motor, and pads from a 3.8 car will allow you to install a Buick motor. If you want a Pontiac or Caddy motor you need to go custom. If you want an LS motor you can go aftermarket. There's a guy in NY that builds high powered 2004r trans for the GN guys and even does installs. I think he goes by the name CK Performance
My brother has an Olds 403 and I have a '69 Olds 455 with the C heads. Either of which would need a rebuild. I've had that 455 for over 26 years.....used to be in my 73 Omega. I also have a set of #5 SB Olds heads. You could use those on a 403 by drilling out the bolt holes from 7/16" to 1/2". Come to think of it...my uncle has a 403 that should be a runner. It was pulled from his 77(or so) Toronado. Let me know - thanks.
cool i definetly want one to get one my email is buickgrandsport71@yahoo.com talk to me more there i could give u my number and what not
... original Buick V6 Regal frame pads/chassis mounts WILL NOT bolt up to a Buick 455 V8 engine. You need to get the TA Performance frame pads ... or fabricate your own. :TU:
