I'm going to be painting my 350 next week and I'm not sure what paint to use. Id like to get something locally available if at all possible. I'm looking for something close to Buick red. Durability is a priority. I know the Krylon isn't available anymore, and the CARS paint is supposedly way off. Any suggestions?

I use toro red. take a look at an old toro, paint hardly changes. and it resists heat pretty good. I use it on the dragster engine which has zoomies and reaches abbynormal temps.

I used the Buick red from KBS Coatings. Tough paint. Good color and luster.

Your durability will come from proper prep, clean clean clean:D

OZGS455 Oh what a wonderful day!

I use clear paving paint and get it tinted to the engine colour, then spray in on through my gun.
$30 a litre you cant go wrong!

All good suggestions. I'm tempted to use the Duplicolor as it's readily available at any auto parts store but I've heard some bad things about it's durability. My engine has been blasted and is down to the bare metal with no rust or old paint or grease on it.

I used the VHT rattle can (supposed to be good for 300 degrees or something like that). Looked real good till I ran it for a about a year then it started to crack and discolor from the heat, mostly on the intake and heads...valve covers still look pretty, but I ain't pulling the engine and painting it all again.

That's what I don't want to happen. How well did you do the prep work?

Looks fantastic, how long have you had it on?

I went out and bought a few cans of the Duplicolor 1653 red today. It's what is available, and from searching old threads, it seems like several members have used it with good success. I'll be sure to be extra thorough with my prep work.

6 months, just be aware that all paint burns off close to the exhaust section of the head, it’s inevitable.

Yeah that is to be expected. I just don't want the whole engine peeling and flaking. Fortunately everything has been sandblasted and has a nice surface to adhere to.

If you have an HVLP gun or don't mind using a brush then Bill Hirsch Engine Enamels makes some great stuff. They have an early and late Buick red. Not local though.
