My car is pretty happy in all situations. With 2-Spal, 2400cfm fans. (stock radiator, iron heads, electric water pump, 11.25CR) The issue is the fans are really loud. I put fan #1 on a resistor to drop the speed but its still loud and when fan #2 comes on it just to much noise. question is, i've been told by old school guys to put a corvette fan on it. Anyone have any useful info for me? Cheers!
Corvette fan?...the late model LS Fbody fans are good and cheap , single Mark8 fan is good but draws a lot of amps
Honestly said, you have two of the best electric fans available. I have the same powerful Fans from Derale and they are running at 20% to hold my temp at 170F. I recommend to install a PWM Fan controller, with this you have very powerful & quit fans when the power isn't needed.
I know this thread is getting old, but I put the mkviii fan on mine, it's loud, but man does it work. However, in my case, it's real close to the water pump pulley(1/2" clearance).
With the MK8 fan especially, and other HD fans make sure your electrical system is top notch and your alternator is upgraded to some serious amps. At idle that baby can suck the power out of your battery if the alternator is spinning too slow and doesn't have enough capacity. I tried the MK8 a few years back with the stock alternator(60A on my '76) and if you want to keep the car cool while idling it would cause problems. Driving down the road no problem. I went back to the mechanical but have since installed the Camaro LT1 dual fans plus a 110A alternator and they work great especially with the almost full coverage shroud as in the above picture. Another thing you need, and again especially with the MK8, is a 60-80A relay. If it doesn't have the LARGE contact blades it is not truly a HD relay. IMO if a fan is not making noise from the air blowing it probably isn't doing much. Think about how a HD thermal clutch fan works, when it is loose it is fairly quiet, but when the clutch start to tighten it gets very loud from all the air it is pulling. One possible idea if you need to flow some air through the radiator(not a lot) but want to keep it fairly quiet is to wire the dual fans in series. That would cut their speed in half maybe and they would be quiet for non demanding times. Remember, generally speaking electric fans are not meant to be running all the time a car is running. Obviously they are running a lot during high temperature times and when the AC may be on but not 100% of the time.
The electric fans from a 2005-2006 GTO fit our radiators perfectly. I have a set installed on my car and our engine run stand. I bent a few tabs out of brass plate and soldered it to the tanks to hold the fans using it's plastic tabs.
Straight blade fans are very noisy. If you’re using straight blade fans switch them over to curved blade. I also have Spal fans and when I switched over to curved blade they are barely audible. The new curved blade Spal also pulls more air than the old straight blade unit.
My curved blade fans, sing loud at 100%. I'm a Buick guy i like things quite and fast. I bought this PWM controller, works more like a new car, ramps up and down depending on temp. http://www.autocoolguy.com/home I will report back! Cheers!
