On TV this am I saw the boys at Dream Car Garage put a " Battery Cover" on the Mustang. Appears to look like old tar top but fits over the new maintenance free battery. Anyone know where to get these and are they available for A/C Delco?

    Dr Olds

I can help you with that for my usual fee of course.

For example, try OPG 1 800-243-8355 item G990032, from page 123 of their Skylark cat. for $45.95. Says R59 on the label.

Thanks I should have just called the Buick Meister. Do they have an online cat? Need 2 R-59's and one earlier for the 66 cars. Dr. O

Try www.batterytoppers.com. Thats where I got mine from. You can also get the terminal post extenders so that you can use the battery cover on a battery that has the removable caps for adding water. The R-59 that I got will look good once I install it in the spring (along with new spring ring battery cables).

I was going to order mine from OPG but it ended up being cheaper through these guys after all of the shipping charges were added.
If you get enough people together that are interested in the battery covers you can work a group discount.

If you are looking for reproduction spring ring battery cables let me know and I will look the name up of the place that I got mine from. I saved about $40 by going directly to the manufacture of the cables.

Thanks Mike , I have all the correct cables and an R-59 battery but it won't hold a charge for over a day or two. I will investigate the covers .

need dimensions for that battery topper cover

For those of you that have in your possession a R-59 Battery topper cover, would you be so kind as to measure the cover and list the dimensions?? I'd like to have that info to see how it would look/ fit on my battery which appears to be a smaller case. TIA:)

    Evans :

Send Buicklawyer a pm. He bought a bunch for his Olds museum. He has tried them and says you must have a particular dimension battery. I will let him explain directly.

    Battery toppers

The R-59 toppers are correct but you must have a Battery that meets the post locations for an original R-59 A/C Delco. Same for the 24 series battery. Some of the batteries sold at Advance store will work but I would suggest you get the topper before you get the battery. Still cheaper than the Original tar top battery and they actually hold a charge! I am happy with my purchase.

Go to www.batterytoppers.com and I think they list the dimensions you need. The topper also works best on a mantenence free battery (one without the covers to add water), but they also have post extenders to make your existing posts longer so that you can use a topper on a battery that has the covers on the holes where you add water.

My battery has the holes and caps to add water and the battery topper works great with the post extenders added.

One question though, the battery topper is an R-59 and I think that big block Buicks came with R-69 batteries (thats what the build sheet for my '68 GS says). How much different are R-69 batteries? Is it just the decal that says R-50 / R-69?

Thanks buicklawyer and Mike! I did follow the link to their site and the dimensions were there: 10 1/2" X 7" with a height of the cover at 3/4".

Now can someone address Mike's question on R-59 or R-69?:Smarty:

    bat.

Year One and others sell a real reproduction R-59. I have one and it's nice. Compared it to an original and it is just like it. BTW 455 cars came with R-69 battery (which nobody repro's).

My '68 GS400 convertible came with and R-69 also, it says so on the build sheet.

How does an R-69 differ from and R-59 appearance wise?

Wanted to bring this one back as I confirmed also from my build sheet that my 70 GS455 came with a R69 battery. Can someone post pics of either an original or repro R69 battery and the R59 battery topper cover? The battery topper doesn't come in R69 style.

My battery is small case and won't work (or look right) with a battery topper cover. I want to look at the other options with the Y1 R69 repro battery and/or an appropriate sized battery and battery topper cover.
