Well it has finally happened BJ Scottsdale is going to sell a restored 10-10 GSX, auto and documented but non matching drive train. I assume it is not a stage 1 since my flyer does not say that it is. I wonder if it is Mark Reeves' car --a member here. So we will know what one will bring as it is no reserve. (It is Lot #673)

There is quite a number of excellant muscle cars for sale there this year. So the competion will be stiff.

There are also some GS cars including a 70 stage 1 for sale.

I note that Buicklawyer on this Board has his second Olds on there for sale -- the first was a W-32 convert and now a 67 W-30.

Yes, I believe this is Mark Reeves' car. I read it recently in a post here. Should be interesting to see what it will bring, nicely restored car.

Having been to BJ it will hurt its sales price to have non matching drive train. Also Buicks do not bring a lot there. I know Mark and admire his work so I hope he does well, but you have to justify the cost of transportation and the unreasonable percentage BJ takes off the top from both the buyer and seller. Then there are the local and state sales taxes, cover fees etc. It never ends there.

Gotta disagree with you Jim. I think the BJ sellers fee are the MOST reasonable in the industry. A nice car will bring a premium at this auction, way above ANY other collector car auction in the country. Many times as much as 25% more! That's far in excess of the sellers fee, transportation and lodging. Of course there are only nice cars at the BJ auction as they literaly can and do pick 700 cars from the 1500 that are offered for entry in this auction. Many fo the cars that do not make the BJ entry will be offered at the "other" sales during those two great weeks in January.

Can't comment about the buyer's fee as I have always been a seller. I do think their bidders registration fee of $300 is very reasonable given all the booze, food, cars, skirts and decadance you can enjoy. The bidder's registration fee was $100 in the early 90's, inflation!

By the way, this is a great way to take the wife to the desert in January and let the car's sale pay for the trip.

I agree if you have a popular six figure car ( Like a GT 500) it is the place to be. However, it is also a place where Buicks historically have not done well price wise.( Remember the stage 1 convert at BJ palm Beach that sold for 20K? or so) If you have a 40 or 50K car you can get stung by getting a 35k top bid and then you have to pay the fees. I still remember the face on a Mopar guy with a nice car in tears when it sold for a a low price at no reserve. I remember a guy from your state with a late 40s perl white Caddy convert he restored from a hulk he bought at Charlotte. He put in a modern Northstar drove it to Cal with his wife won top prize, was at the Turkey Run etc. He told me he had turned down low six figures . He was looking for 120K. He took it to BJ looking for the big payday and man this car was wonderful red leather --nothing but the finest. It brought low 70k at BJ with no reserve. He was sick.

If you happen to attract the attention of two or more whales and they get into a biding war you can also have a big payday. But it is a crap shoot on this car. I hope it does well but it is not a sure thing. Those people at BJ can buy anything as money is no object. They can just decide if they want an X they will buy a numbers matching. You never know.

You got to admit, the GSX is one good looking car! Certainly a lot more tasteful than some of the cars I've seen on Barrett Jackson. I hope Mark's car does well too! Good Luck,Mark! :TU:

This is a 400 point car that has won many national awards. (and deservably so)
I agree with the comment about people paying the big bucks wanting numbers
matching, but with that getting harder to come by, it could surprise us.
    Time will tell!

Just like you we have owned two GsX stage 1 cars. We are rooting for Mark make no mistake about it. However I would say that at BJ an LS6 would have in the past brought 2 to 3 times what an x would bring. I have never seen an x bring over 50K on the open market although no one really can be sure about non disclosed private sales. I know some were asking close to 100K at a private sale.

Perhaps the publicity brought on by Gesslar and some Hemi v Buick articles has changed the market. If Mark rings the bell with a non stage 1, automatic, non matching drive train car the prospects for a 400 point stage 1 , 4 speed , matching drive train car will even greater.

and here it is at the BPG nats as mentioned in the BJ description.

    That's not Mark's.
I think that is Glen's, which is also a very nice car.
    Stage 1 non-air 4 speed. Great combo!
Mark's is the one in the back ground on the right.

Appears from the pic to have painted valve covers so perhaps it is Mark's nonstage? Two great cars side by side.

    Jeff,
No this one is Mark's. Mine is on the right with the door open. Thanks for the compliment.

    I stand corrected.
I was thinking I was to the right of Mark at the show.
Guess I was over one more.

    Oh well :Dou:

This aught to be interesting... craig jackson has had several quotes in both hemmings and hemmings muscle machines that the top money getter this year(2005) at the auction will be gsx's....

I may have to go just to see this auction. I remember what Craig said too. If it goes well you will see Mark there again in 2006 with Scott's former 71 Cortez Gold X.

Hopefully for Mark's sake, he will get a couple whales interested in having a bidding war.

A non-numbers car typically takes a pretty good hit on the open market, but that does not mean it costs any less to do a nice one. A gallon of paint costs the same, regardless of what numbers are stamped on the block.

This often time influences the decision by some on exactly how to do their car. There are a ton of nice GS's out there, with the orginal motor long gone, that I would love to see concours restored. But that is typically one of the most expensive options when thinking about what to do with your car. A good sale price for this particular car could begin to change that way of thinking.

Athough it is a two edged sword, higher values, within a reasonable limit, would help our hobby. Simply because there would be more interest in doing repro parts, and that helps the guys wanting to do a 75-100K car, as much as those of us who just want decent wheelhouses on our driver. Right now, there are lots of folks with the money to do a concours car, but the specter of getting half what they have in it, should they ever have to sell, keeps them from taking the plunge, and understandably so.

I guess we will just have to see what happens.

Well, now for my oft ignored 2 cents....

I hope that Mark cleans up with his GSX! With all the recent attention Buick A bodies are getting these days, it's about time. Beth, I agree with your "selfish" reasons  , but I have already accepted the fact that I will most likely not ever own a real GSX. Soooo, let the value of my numbers matching GS climb! But, please god...let me stumble upon some dummy who wants $5,000 for his GSX....4 speed....no air...amen.

If any of you missed Marks and Glens GSX's, let me tell you, they were a sight to behold. I was afraid to look at my car after looking at these beautiful machines. The detail was amazing, and actually made me ill. Mark, if I had the money, it would be in my garage. Maybe there will be some rich bastard with class out there hey? :Brow:

Many people have different views on the auction, I feel it is a great thing, but wow this will be my first time in the last 3 to 4 years seeing a buick GSX going up for auction. I dont doubt what so ever that his GSX is restored properly, but that show is really all about originality, even if you have a restored car #'s matching, what will a buick bring, not much in my opinion, but who knows maybe that British guy will take a liking to it, yeah right its not european, and after all he couldnt handle a big block if he tried. I hope whoever is selling it that they get a lot out of it, but those shows are so picky, and when one sees a original GSX on the lot for sale and the original #'s matching motor is not there, then how much money would you pay for a car that is so close but yet so far away from being complete, I would pay a pretty dime, but those folks there at BJ auctions are very picky, and I bet more than anything during the lots appreance the main thing they will pick on is the unoriginality of the motor, and all the potential it could have had price wise if the motor was matching with the car. Anyhow good luck on your auction, and I will be rooting for the price to raise up as far as possible.

I just hope that we see Mark's car on TV when Speed channel airs the auction. Maybe the GSX will get some much deserved publicity. It would be refreshing to see a Buick get some credit "on air" . Unfortunately, I must agree with Jim in that I dont think it will break any records for price. Its just a sad reality. Which is fine by me, I want one too

From Marks number I would say he will be up midday Friday. It looks like TV coverage starts 3 pm MST on Friday so I think you will miss it.
