I have a restored '72 Electra with (unfortunately) ACC; can anyone refer me to a shop on the East Coast (I'm in PA) that will rebuild/swap out this system? I am being deployed for the foreseeable future so it's not a matter of time, and I lack the expertise to do it myself. I know what you're going through...Car looks great but no A/C. I've got the ATC system in my 77 Riviera. I couldn't find anyone and the parts were no different. I bought a shop manual, vacuum pump, manifold gauge set and a few cases of R-12. It took a while to study/learn how the system works and I was able to troubleshoot and repair it. It's not a cut & dry repair...it takes time. That's why you won't find anyone to tear into it. Where are you in Central PA? I'm south of Harrisburg on the west shore.
Have a couple months of leave to burn in NOV/DEC, planning on spending most of it going over the Buick. Anyone in PA/MD familiar with the 1972 ACC? Blows hot now. Wiring, under-dash is intact and unmolested, will pay cash for fix or for a manual A/C swap.:dollar:
Do you have a factory service manual? My Electra has ACC and I learned alot when I replaced the heater core.
I'm tearing the one out of one car and replacing it whit the non-thermostated one. Supposed to remove inner and outter boxes and swap....
I have the ACC system in my Riv. I bought all the available books on the car and that system off Ebay. went through it step by step. I have it working. not exactly right but it blows cold out the proper vents. Parts are going to be your challenge. The 2 I need are the vacume program disks. I think I have finally located some and that should finish it.
Are they old stock someone has in their stash or are they available from a supplier now? I've always wanted to learn to refurb those controls as an addition to my business, but could never find a source for the rubber parts. It's been a few years since I looked.
I think the guy at Cars Inc has them. I looked up the part# stamped on the disk and did a google search that lead me to his page. I called and he said he would pull the part and personaly call me back to describe it in detail and send pics before I buy. There is 2 disk a 4 port and a 6 port. 2 cables.
Fixed! The defective part was ID'ed by my mechanic's semi-retired assistant -- no part # yet, will add when I get that from him. Entire system works as new, amazingly! :TU:
It sure looks like a Termal Limiter that was taken out of its case. These used to be on the plate above the compressor. Is that where it came from ?? Or was it inside the Programmer ? Let us know. Its a fuse for the compressor so when it overheats it blows the fuse and kicks out the clutch. Your compressor should have the switch in the back plate of the compressor that one of those terminals goes to. I thought they were available at any parts store.
I dont remember seeing that part in my ACC System. I ended up replacing the entire system with a mechanical one from a parts car. everything works perfectly now with the exception of the hot/cold switched. IDK why but dont care. I now have the entire ACC system with controls and all new parts with manuals for sale.
Blower motor resistor? Yeah it controls the speeds but it could send signals to some other part of the system also!
What parts were required to switch to mechanical? If it's just a mechanical heater control unit (pictured), that should be pretty straightforward -- was there more to it?
your car and mine are quite different but Id think the process would be about the same. Part of the box on my firewall, the control unit, different cable from the control to the firewall and some wiring / vac line changes outlined in the chassis manual.
