I'm finally in the market for a limited slip diff and since i only have 2 choice that i know of to go with I thought I would ask the question.
Which is better the auburn or the eaton?

I will say 1 thing from what I've seen the auburn looks like it would be easier to rebuild.

Oh and b4 i forget the rear end is an 8.2 chevy c-clip from a 71-72 a body car.
Does anyone know what spline count is on the pinion gear for the yoke?
    17 or 25 i think but i don't know which 1.

Call Jim at JD Race in Ohio. He is a regular contributer and identified my rear. You will see pics posted of my rear end on a posting about 3 posts below yours ( What rear end to use). It appears that mine is out of a 71 Chevy open rear. Take a look at my pics and see if it matches yours.
Jim is really knowledgeable and got me on my way.

Let Jim respond, but I believe the Eaton is a lot easier to rebuild.

Not to mention better. I am using an Eaton Tru-trac in my 12 bolt with c-clips. They don't have clutches to wear out either, it is all gear driven and doesn't require special lubricants.

The truetrac was my first choice. But then I found out that they don't make them for the 8.2 So I have only the 2 choices listed above.

Auburn unit is a cone type unit and would be like a stock 10 bolt 8.2 Buick olds and pontiac rear.

Eaton is the clutch type unit found in all Chevy rears.

Auburn units are usually not serviceable...With out major machining etc.

Eaton units can have the clutches replaced and as long as the case and spiders are in good shape it can be rebuilt many times over and over IF NEEDED.

Your pinion spline count on the rear from 1965-1972 10 bolt 8.2 is 25 spline

The 17 spline pinion was the Early Chevy drop out third member rear from 1955-1964 chevy rears.

Hope this info helps in your decision you have. Please feel free to get price quote by PMing me here. Jim

Not all Chevs had the eatons. The later 8.5" 10 bolts had auburn posi's. At least the b-bodies did through the 90's. Those ones were not servicable supposedly. They did make some replacement parts for them though so who knows.

I am pretty sure we were talking about the muscle car era...lol :) . Jim

    1972 and older

But if you want to go there here we go...:3gears:

There were SOME borg warner units ( CONE TYPE unit) but not too many.
Borgs were also used in some of the early 8.5 1970-1972 era also camaro, skylark etc.

1973 started the corp rears which we really do not consider chevy rears as by this time everything was getting standardized and was just considered GM parts...You can weed out BOP 8.5 rear from chevy 8.5 rear by a bolt in axle compared to a c-clip axle up till about 1975...afterthat they all went to c-clip axle system. NO MOre definite division standards by the time the mid seventies roll in as we know in 1972 and older vehicles. :( Kind of miss that.

Oil crisis screwed up everything. we had buick motors in chevys and chevys engines in oldsmobiles, lawsuits etc... and by 1977 everything was DONE FOR!!!! :blast: :Do No:

1973-1987 10 bolt 8.5 car rears used the trac lock units (clutches type 28 spline axle units) some later 1978-1989 full size BOP cars received the auburn units
1975-1988 10 bolt 7.5 car rears used the Auburn cone units (early were bolt together units and later were redesigned as 7 5/8" units with bolt on cap end)
1988-1996 10 bolt 8.5 car rears used auburn units (30 spline axles)
1982-1989 10 bolt 7.5 small truck used A eaton governor locker unit (clutch)
1990-2002 10 bolt 7.6 cars used the auburn unit and in the ls motored cars a new torsen gleasen unit was introduced also(camaro and t/a - helical worm gear unit)
1990-2003 10 bolt 7.6 small truck used again the eaton gov lock unit(clutch)
1974-2010 10 bolt 8.5 rear used the eaton gov lock also (clutch type)

I am sure there are little things left out BUT this is the general rule for GM car posi history.

1989-1990 was the years the rears 7.5 and 8.5 switched from 26 spline to 28 and 28 -30 spline axles accordingly.
