is the ati balancer 918410 a bolt on replacement or the does it require modification of the timing cover?
Buick engines require mounting damper face forward of the OEM location to clear the timing cover for external balance dampers. Hubs may be machined on the crank gear end when using the shorter internal balance units to move the damper closer to the engine. 403-455 is .725” forward of the OEM location; 265-350 V8 and 252 V6 are 1.250” forward of the OEM location. I use BBC crank pulley that will need some machine work to fit.
the stock balancers come apart therefore you are done racing. The bad balancer also broke the front cover causing it to leak oil and had to replace it. Dan
We went with the BHJ SFI approved dampner from TA Performance...not cheap by any means, but it is a high quality piece.
Marty, I'm pretty sure we stuck with externally balanced. The rods were balanced. (Small ends, and big ends) Because of the clearancing we had to do for the cam. Pistons and rings were balanced to the lightest set, and kept as a complete set. The shop had everything...crank, ring gear, balancer, rods, Pistons, rings, pins, bearings...everything. We didn't bring in the crank pulley, because they said they are zero balanced. (Will work on any engine, as they are balanced separately. And you can see the drill marks from removing material on the front/back of the pulley from the factory.)
