:Dou: :Dou: Lol the one you bought from me with the 3.42 gear ratio I cleaned the hell out of it.Havent caught up on this thread so have you swapped out a new cam and dynoed it?Hopefully you will get it all squared away!:beers2: :beers2: :3gears: :3gears:O that sucks about the debris I just read that.Well like others have said at least you caught it now, instead of having her grenade on you going down the track. At least when its all said and done you will be runnin hotter than before!

The older type neoprene seals had to be file fitted. In other words, they were too big and needed to be trimmed to fit. So any wrong fitment, results in leaky seal.

My heads are 1231109s castings with all the tricks, and its a 4 speed car.

I can't recall what its degreed too.

Its a touch too lumpy. I think in a 455 it would be a bit tamer. I can't cruise in 4th below 40, its too choppy. If I had 3.73s it probably wouldn't be an issue, but i have 3.42s.

That cam will pull very hard past 6200, with out slowing down. I have the MSD rpm knob instead of the pills. Its adjustable from 4800-6800 rpm. my brother thinks its funny to turn it all the way up, thats how I found out..

    Welp, it gets worse.

Looks like the block is toast.

Pulled the heads. Looks like BOTH head gaskets were leaking. I'll post pics further down to see if anyone agrees.

But what has convinced me to start over from scratch with my spare '76 block is that when we pulled one particiular head bolt it was covered with milkshake! The offending bolt is under the valve cover between #6 and 8, next to a water jacket.

    <a href="http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/?action=view&current=1001091950.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/1001091950.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Here you can see the area of the block between #4 and 6. Looks different from the rest of the deck. Leaking???

    <a href="http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/?action=view&current=1001091949b.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/1001091949b.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Here you can see what EVERY cylinder has... RUST at the top. Been growing for a while by the look of it.

    <a href="http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/?action=view&current=1001091949.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/1001091949.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Looks like a lot of rust at the end of this head gasket.

    <a href="http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/?action=view&current=1001091951a.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/1001091951a.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Look at the crud between # 3 and 5...

    <a href="http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/?action=view&current=1001091953.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/1001091953.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And remember, this engine made 447HP and 530 lb ft of torque!

    More rust...

    <a href="http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/?action=view&current=1001091951.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/1001091951.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Here's the 2-4-6-8 deck. Looks odd with that real clean area:

    <a href="http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/?action=view&current=1001091950a.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh41/1badriv/455/1001091950a.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

So, I have to have the heads checked, just to be safe. If they are not good the Riv will sit for a couple of years until I can scrape up enough cash for aluminum heads. I will NOT bolt this engine back together with any heads that don't flow as well as these.

It's only money and I can make more. But it will take me a while. Wifey has been unemployed for 16 months. So it goes.

I spoke with the shop this morning. He is inspecting the heads right now and will let me know the condition. We do know there is a crack in one of the bosses surrounding a valve guide. He thinks it has been like that for a while and sees no issue with it.

I'm having trouble scheduling free time to move my new engine from storage to where I can disassemble it down to the short block so I can take it to the shop to be built. Hopefully one night this week.

We'll reuse my .030 Speed Pro forged pistons and bore the new block. I figure we'll use the rods from the new engine because they haven't had the snot beat outta them like the ones in my old mill. Then do rings and bearings and haul it to the dyno again. Probably not until near Thanksgiving. So my season is over. Can't wait til spring!

So was I. But now I'm more stoked than ever.

Although, I can't help but believe I'm taxing the limits of the carrier bearing on the driveshaft. Let's hope it holds together.

Nope. I'll be in Connecticut for a wedding next weekend. Maybe Atco. If not, then Atco in the spring, if it isn't owned by the Chinese by then.

    Update!

    The update is:

I built a new engine. 1975 block. I used the 1975 crank and rods with my old Speed Pro forged pistons. My heads checked out OK. He cleaned up the crack in the one boss and I'm good to go. So I'm using my pistons, heads and B4B intake.

Last Saturday we dyno'd the new build. it is pretty tight and I should get a few more horses after it loosens up a bit. The numbers are:

441HP@5300 (I'm guessing 450 after it loosens up)
510 ft lb torque at 3900 - and I believe the torque peake is well before that so I am guessing 530 ft lb of torque somewhere aroung 3000 RPM.

We ran it with the Pro System 950 and the Quick Fuel 850 and made the most power with the best response with the 850. It was fat right out of the box and leaning it 4 numbers front and rear picked up 11 HP and put the O2 numbers right where whe want them. It likes 36* of timing the most.

The old motor shoed 2 bad head gaskets and on the dyno the flat spot between 4000 and 5000 was evident, then it jumped from 5000 to 5500. It made 447 HP. The new motor shows no dead spot and pulls hard to 5500. We surmise that the cam was bad in the old engine... either it went bad or was ground funny. I thought it could have been the bad head gaskets but the dyno guy says no.

Just yesterday I painted the new engine and got most of the stuff bolted on for the install. On Wednesday I should have it completely ready to drop back in the car and expect to do so on Thursday or Saturday.

yardley, have someone sit in the car with you while you make a few runs. have them monitor a vacuum gauge and note any differences between cold and warm runs. there are many vacuum diagnos charts on the internet. good luck
