Its hard for me to believe that people can make much selling on auction versus selling private. Anyone ever do it? The seller has to transport the car there (with the strong possibility it will need to be transported home if no sale), pay for lodging, meals, extras and pay the seller fees. Then the buyer has to pay a huge buyers premium(10%) and full boat on tax...plus transport it home. Unless the seller is willing to do some serious price cutting or the buyer doesn't mind overpaying...then I guess it works. If the car is super rare with lots of documentation then it may pay. How do people justify overpaying for cars that are non matching...guess pure emotion? Especially now with muscle car prices eroding...not sure if the auction route pays...I think quite the opposite...it costs time and money that would have been better spent selling private. Your thoughts.
A friend of mine has sold several in FL, the best was the '71 GS, she told them if it didn't get the reserve, she would drive it home and put it back in the garage, lives 2.5 miles away.
To me it's a whole experience Why not Craigslist is usually a joke As to sell when you are up there while your car is on the block Frank Mecum will usually ask you what's it take to sell the car most of the time he will accept a 5 percent charge instead of 10. Plus being a car guy to me the experience to kick back and relax and actually see what some of these things look like in person and the price people pay are mind blowing believe you me. Black electrical tape on battery cables you name it and it sells for 25K wow... I have seen some funky stuff but again there are clean cars too. Also have a beer and buy something at least I just did in Vegas a couple of weeks ago.
I bought one at Mecum Kissimmee a few years ago and it was exciting. I'm sure selling is very nerve wracking. I have a neighbor who buys at the lower price auctions like Harrisburg and sells at the higher price auctions like Kissimmee. It's normal for min to buy/sell 6 to 8 cars at an auction. He wins on some, looses on others but comes out ahead somehow. I see price disparities from auction to auction, it looks like there's a 20 to 30 % difference between Barrett Jackson West Palm and Scottsdale, so, you could buy at WP and sell at SD and make money.
I'm going to try to go. I live about 2 hours away from kissimee. It definitely looks like a fun experience
going to look at the cars. It's stretched over several days so not sure which specific day I am going.
You can get a bidders pass with a guest pass for the entire duration of the auction for $100 in advance. It costs $30 for one person to get in as a spectator, so, if you and a friend go more than one day it's cheaper to get the bidders pass.
