I bought a set of what I think are Mitch's center caps from The Parts Place for my 66 Skylark several months ago and I didn't get any installation/assembly instructions with them. Anyone have an instruction sheet handy?

If you don't want to post them publicly for some reason, could you PM me?

    Thanks in advance.

I will look in the morning and see if I still have some from my caps

Also, I'm sure if you PM to mitchr here, he'd be happy to email you a copy. I don't recall the specifics myself, it's been a while.

As far as I know, there are no installation instructions. There is a metal strap, that screws in from behind, to the cap to prevent loss and theft. Do you have a more specific question? I have Mitch's caps on all my wheels. Install was straight forward and easy.

Maybe this page from the Cars Catalog will help.

The long bracket in the picture goes on last. That is the anti theft feature. The emblem goes in, then the gasket, then the steel retainer screws in and holds everything together. Then the cap is installed to the wheel, and the long bracket screws to the cap from the back side of the wheel.

    OK. Here's all I got.

I did a search here and someone had mentioned bending or breaking two of the tabs to mount to crossbar. That didn't seem right. Also, how do you secure the cap to the wheel. It seems to me that you pop the cap on the wheel with the long bar installed in the cap, and then after installed on the wheel, you put the small bar on from inside the wheel, but how do you secure it? Is there supposed to be 2 more screws? Does the long bar go underneath the spring retainer or on top of it?

edit...Was in the process of typing my response when you added more to your post. From the Cars picture, it looks like the long bar goes underneath the spring retainer, between the gaps in the teeth, but that would mean bending or breaking 2 of the medallion retainers.

I guess I could rotate the retainer 45° and install the long bar under the retainer, but then that still leaves how do you secure it to the wheel?

It has been a long time since I assembled mine. It looks as though the long bar does in fact go in under the retainer ring. There are 2 bosses that are lower in the cap. The long bar goes across those two bosses. So emblem goes in, then gasket, then long bar, then retainer ring and 4 screws hold that all together. The shorter bar is the anti theft feature. That goes on after the cap is installed on the wheel. Looks like you are missing 2 longer screws. The long bar has 2 inner holes. The longer screws go through the shorter bar and screw to those inner holes. I have 2 extra rims(Drag Radials) that have caps installed on them. I'll take a picture later and post it.

    Thanks. Appreciate the help.

Apparently, I'm missing those 2 lockbar screws on each of my caps. None of my 4 caps have those screws.

edit...Thanks bignasty. That clears it up. It looks like I do have to break 2 of the tabs. I knew I had to be missing something.

    Thanks everyone for the info.

That may be a different design than my caps. I do not remember breaking off any tabs. I look at my caps later to confirm that though.

As I suspected, my retainer clips are different. I bought these from Mitch about 7 or 8 years ago. My caps do not fit tight, you have to use the anti theft bar. Centercap1.jpg

Are there any anti-theft bars for 71 caps?

That isn't an add on thing for stock caps. Mitch's caps have that feature. I would think his repros for the 71 and up caps have that option

Thanks Larry. Its one of the things I worry about when I step away from the Buick. It's way to easy.

I just found this forum recently, and more importantly the solution to my problem. I purchased a set of these from OPG that came with no instructions either. Their customer support line was zero help after 2 calls, and an email to their tech support went unanswered.
This is just what I have been looking for, thanks for the help!
