I haven't felt the best the last couple weeks and finally went to the Dr after being wakened by terrible joint pain several nights in the middle of the night. I shrugged it off thinking the bed was the issue,or driving with my wallet in my back pocket etc.. Today,I was diagnosed with Lyme disease. It's curable but the meds they give you will let you get severe sunburn. Not great for someone who works out in the sun all day.Lots of sunscreen is on my agenda for the next 21 days..I will just be happy to lose the joint pain..

Doxycycline is the anti biotic most often prescribed. Based upon personal experience you better find a big hat, gloves, long sleeves and a handkerchief for your face or else. It is best to stay out of the sun.

Anytime I get a tick bite I take Doxy immediately. Worked so far.
Anytime you take heavy antibiotics you have to worry about sun exposure.

My cousin's wife got it. It didn't kill her, but she had a couple of rough years. I would do everything that the doctors tell you to do. I had several tick bites that formed the bullseye when I lived in Massachusetts. I beat feet to the doctor each time. I was lucky - no Lyme, but after watching others with it, I am now very careful. We don't see a lot of ticks here - I think that the small lizards eat them, but I still check myself after working outside. I hope that you will be OK, Pat.

Look into UBF clothing. It's not cheap, but I got a Columbia blood and guts shirt with 50UBF. Went fishing yesterday, it was sunny and 95°F and 70° dew point. The shirt worked great.

If you need something less casual:

You're going to sweat no matter what you wear, so you may as well get some protection out of it too.

I have not had Lyme disease but I have had "tick fever". One weekend I started aching all over and had no energy. Then the fever and chills started. I remembered pulling a small (1/16" dia.) tick off of my ankle (I had a rash around the bite mark) the week before so I figured it was time to go to the doctor. He checked me out and said he thought I had "Tick Fever" but just to be on the safe side since the results of my tests weren't back, he gave me the medicine for Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. It took me about 3 months before I felt 100% again.

Your skin is going change color in a big way with dark spots if you get sun while taking this drug.

I can't tell you for sure what happened as it's been years ago, but my mom got bitten and I think she had a negative reaction to the drug they gave her. She had mild Bell's Palsy but she's much better than before after years of therapy. She used to have a very hard time closing one of her eyes and she hates some photos because she can only smile from one side.

My wife has Lyme. She went undiagnosed (2/16 to 2/17) for a long time (no tick bite). She is still struggling to get totally free of symptoms.
She started feeling sick like 2/16; really bad in August 2016, pretty much time in bed- finally got an Igenex genetics test that was positive for Lyme @ 2/17.
Got feeling well enough to get out of bed April 2017.
Take the Doxy and get it fixed, you do not want to f around with this.

Found two ticks feeding on me last week in the shower. They were both on my back. Not sure where the heck I picked them up from. I didn't take anything but they itched like a mosquito bite.

I feel for ya Pat. I've pulled quite a few ticks off over the years, luckily (knock on wood) never an issue. But it scares the crap outta me everytime I find one.

How did they find it, how does one get tested for it. Is it a common test that they do on a check up?
    Praying for you friend

My spouse had another condition caused by ticks that will sneak up on you. That condition is Rocky Mountain Non-spotted Fever. You can get Spotted with the rash and Non-spotted without the rash.

Common CDC test works if one knows there is a tick bite and its has been recent. If some time has passed, this test yields false negative results...
The other test is Igenex genetics test. If its not caught early, this is the more accurate test.
Lots of stuff out in Google about it. Ted

I can't speak for the rest of the country, but in New England (Connecticut is the home of Lyme Disease) it's the little ticks that are the ones to worry about. The bigger ones are a nuisance, and a pain (both literally and figuratively) to pull out, but they won't give you Lyme disease.
