My 70 has never had a working radio in the 15 years I've owned it. The BBB just sounds too good! But I figured I should remedy that and started a plan, a devious plan. How to have a modern radio with sufficient power and all the new tech stuff but out of sight and on a budget (no custom auto sound for me!) too.
Turns out that the major brands have come up with a very short radio, basically a single din style but with no CD player. Take out all that mechanism and they get pretty small. And a small power amp (400w) and some nice speakers and hey, now we're talking!
I saw how Todd cut down an AM radio to save weight, so I went another step and did it for space. Those AM radios are huge. Lots of space back there behind the dash if there is no radio. And I have AC which takes up alot of that space, but still.

And to top it off, you can get a USB drive that is tiny, basically enough for a long playlist and only 1/4" tall.
And here we go! Just finished it and it sounds pretty good. Have to see how it sounds over the rumble of a BBB, but I have high hopes:

The fake is held in by strong magnets.

I did cheat and put some old school 6X9's in the rear deck with plain grills - looks so 70's. Added 4X10 in the stock dash location and one under the dash plus two tweeters near the kick panels. IMG_0741.JPG IMG_0742.JPG
The radio is controlled by a remote. And there is room to spare:

Follow-up - I've been running around both in town and on the highway and this set up sounds great. I can crank it up or go low and the music is excellent. I will note that the remote is a little finicky. You have to point it just right to go past the dummy AM radio. Also, I got my phone hooked up - sweet! Virginia is now hands free so I got that covered!
