I had a little time today and took a look at that tape deck. I opened it up and it literally looked like it was put together yesterday. Spotless inside. I cleaned up the tape head with a Q tip and some alcohol, and tested it. Plays perfectly! I cant believe it. I ran in the basement and grabbed my "This is Elvis" 8 track. And waddya know...I hear "I've Lost You" blaring out of my speaker!! LOL. Im seriously considering throwing it in the beater with a pair of 6x9's in the package shelf. The FM works too. The reception is better than the AM/FM in the car. I gave the chrome a polish with some flitz and cleaned it up. Its gleaming now
Just wow! It was the perfect unit for me because it had the FM option and the Impala had AM only and I didn't want to trash the original radio. Stick it in the beater!
Check this out.....mounted on top of the 8 track was this big chrome bracket. At first I couldn't figure out what the heck it was. After looking at it for a few minutes, it come to me- Its an attachment so you can pull out the tape deck and take it with you. Its got 4 circuits on it. You wire the power to the deck through this thing. The top bracket bolts to the underside of the dash, then the lower bracket slides in an locks. Ive never seen anything like this before. So 70's!
Blast from the past! They made that slide mount and another that was satin black called the mini mount. Same deal, detachable.
Jason, you are definitely not a child growing up in the 70's. That was the de-facto theft prevention device of the decade. I had one on both my CB and my under dash radio/8-track. Wow, and here I thought you were "with it".....
if my memory is working .$20.oo for a working 8 track was the going rate in the 70s .minimum wage was $1.25 GAS WAS LESS THAN .40 so 5 minutes or less to grab one was a good day !! even easier on a slide mount? that's what I heard!
