What size exhaust do you have? I shaved off 0.3 seconds by going from stock size dual to 2.5” dual exhaust on a very mild 455. Another 0.2 seconds with a converter from Jim W.
In process of organizing 455 build which I hope for 550+hp. Car would be street/strip with TA Stage 1 or Stg 2,etc. Aside from Qjet, which carb would you recommend as best fit? Thanks for all input. Steve
Not sure what you're asking. With an aftermarket Aluminum intake, any carburetor will "fit". Holley or Edelbrock.
Poor choice of words on my part, didn't mean physical fit...which carb would provide the best performance/ability to tune/ reliability for 550+ HP assuming all other engine components are well matched.
Holley carburetors are the easiest to tune. I use a Quadrajet for the street and a 1000 Holley DP type carburetor for the track. The Holley gets me about a tenth and a half and 1-2 MPH more trap speed. The Quadrajet is MUCH better on gas, and I get plenty of performance out of it. I can swap carburetors in 15 minutes or less. ANY carburetor will require tuning to get the best out of it.
Tks Larry. Does core have to be provided to the rebuilders or do they have cores in stock they rebuild from?
Holley stuff is all brand new. You can buy from Holley, Quickfuel, AED, etc. The guys here on V8 that build Q-Jets have their own cores, or they can build yours.
My 1986 B4B intake and a thermoquad allow dual snorkel cleaner and hits hood grills like stock intake
Doesn't the B4B move the carburetor mounting pad forward? How could the air cleaner mate up to the hood like stock? Wouldn't it be forward by that amount?
Larry not sure how it worked when the B4B was made but when I look through hood grills both scoops are right under the grills center but have heard it was forward from stock also so maybe the first made were and some point reworked for later years made
This is a picture I took for someone asking the same question earlier this year on a Facebook page. I have an early B4B and it is forward a bit but if you zoom in, you can see the breather is still mostly exposed.
Keep in mind that factory air cleaner is good for about 390 HP, in it's stock form.. Combos more powerful that that need allow more air into the engine, If you want to keep the look of the GS air cleaner, but have it perform on your higher HP engine, then you need to use a 14" air cleaner lid, that just covers the filter, and leaves a gap open to the bigger housing base. This allows up to 600 HP street motors to breath better. Also be careful of aftermarket air cleaner bases on your Q-jet.. I have seen some of them affect secondary airflow and fuel metering, to the tune of up to 40 HP loss on the dyno. When at the strip, unless you have some type of sealed hood scoop setup, (not the factory one that is ineffective above 35mph) take the air cleaner off completely. Q-jets consistently run the best on the dyno "naked".. JW
At the track, with what might be a 450 hp flywheel motor, running without my GS air cleaner set up (with a 3 inch filter that raises the lid 1/2 inch above the housing) gives me a tenth and 1-2 mph.
