My 1970 GS has autozone front drums. 9 1/2 x 2 1/2" bks Cast iron drum replaces O.E.M. aluminum drum Can I replace them with rear BUICK models Reproduction Aluminum Brake Drums Drum: 9-1/2 " x 2.5 " NEW PAIR https://www.ebay.com/itm/BUICK-mode...h=item1a2d8cf2ac:g:ZeIAAOSwTA9X4uLv:rk:2:pf:0 Thanks, John
In other words, can 9 1/2 x 2 1/2" rear Grand National aluminum drums mount in place of 9 1/2 x 2 1/2" front GS drums?
The short answer is no, you cant. If you want, you can send your original aluminum front drums out to get re-lined .
I fond it odd they list them as 2.5". All GN's to the best of my knowledge came with 9.5"x 2.0" shoes. So what exactly do they fit?
Vista Cruisers & Sport Wagons had 9 1/2" x 2 1/2" rear shoes. I think it is highly doubtful they made drums for so few of these cars. I would guess there is some kind of mistake.
The ad states that this rear aluminum drum does not fit wagons. Therefore, I think these are not 2-1/2” wide as advertised. I installed rear brake backing plates from a Vista Cruiser on my 70 GS so that I could run the 2-1/2“ wide aluminum front drums on the rear. Marv.
So would 9 1/2 x 2 1/2 rear drums fit the front? Unfortunately I have unlined iron replacements. Thanks John
Yes I am running the same aluminum drums on the rear of my 1970 GS 455 as I have on the front. All 4 of my drums are 2-1/2" wide. I changed the backing plates to the station wagon backing plates that utilized the 2-1/2" wide rear drums and the front aluminum drums work great on the rear. Marv.
If you are using 9 1/2" x 2 1/2" drums -- and you don't want to rip them to smithereens with these new garbage bc rake shoes the world is forced to sell --- I fortunately have N.O.S. ++ Asbestos ++ brake shoes for this application.... Not too many remaining...
