Got a very patinaed red wrinkle Riviera air cleaner from eBay. The base is too small to fit onto a edlebrock and a 1966 quadrajet. Does this only for the 4jet or was there an inbetween adapter?

Totally depends on the year of the aircleaner. If it was made between 63-66, then it'll fit the AFB and the 4GC Rochester, only the 66 model will fit a Q-Jet, and even then, the first ones were smaller than the later ones. The AFB base was the smallest, the Q-jets were bigger.

I get the impression it's a 63 red Riviera one off an early 425...maybe he should post a picture to settle any confusion.

Easy solution, get an air cleaner spacer:
    https://www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/air-filter-assembly-spacers

It fits on the big carb opening, and the smaller opening of the air cleaner sits on top of the spacer/ring. The lip of the air cleaner will overhang a little reducing flow, but it's not a big deal.

I used this method on my newer AFB's to use the stock 2x4 air cleaner. I cut a spacer ring out of a 1 lb coffee can 'back in the day'.
