Well, I was able to finally finish the 64 galaxie I had picked up and posted up for sale. A gentleman reached out and offered me a 69 Skylark as a trade along with a ton of parts. I'm happy to adopt a 69 Skylark. Used to have one a while back and it's bringing back memories. The bad: Has a Chevy 350 -_- He removed the Top and trim Does have some usual rust in quarters Will need some paint or epoxy primer to seal it while I get it dialed in. The Good: Included a rebuilt Buick 350 Long Block with rebuilt heads, GS Hood with louvers and air cleaner seals New dash All sorts of odds and ends, even a radio Delete plate, extra dash , new valve covers and stickers etc. The car actually runs and stops. Just needs a new brake booster and I think there's something funky going on with the fusible links. The headlights don't work but everything else does. I definitely want to paint it the original red color, I'm guessing it's Signal Red. Anyone have a good source for the paint? I'm pretty excited to get this going. I will daily it while I have the TKO600 installed into my 70 skylark. I will definitely be needing some parts for the 69 in case anyone has some!
Going to finally take it on the road tomorrow. I replaced the brake booster and the leaky steering box with the old one out of my 70. The headlights weren't working and I figured it was a fusible link. Sure enough, some dummy grounded the fusible link to the frame! I have no idea why. Now the high beams work but low beams turns all 4 on super dim. I'm thinking the previous owner might have switched the wires on the bulbs thinking that was the problem. I'll take a look tomorrow. She fires right up, but still want to pull the chevy engine and drop in the included Buick 350. I have some plans for it meanwhile. Should be a nice grocery getter for now.
I assume that last pic with the vinyl top and nice red paint is either: -- A before of the same car. -- A different car showing what you hope to accomplish. Or maybe you are just a fast worker.
I wish I was that fast and had the funds available haha That's a picture of the car before the previous owner took the top off and sanded the paint down to see how much bondo there was.
Was that car originally black (looking at the door jambs) or a total red repaint before the vinyl top went on? Either way looks good.. '69s are one of the few exceptions to no vinyl top for me cars. What was the '64 starship worth? Always had a soft spot for a few Fords too. A pal had one... 390 with a 3 on the tree moredoor. Black with red guts. Fun times! Stay with it Joe! ws
I think vinyl tops get a bad rap. Sure, well-used old cars with vinyl tops invariably have hidden rust once the vinyl top is removed, but remember: -- GM did not do a great job painting under the original vinyl roofs. -- Paint technology has improved dramatically in the last fifty years. -- These cars originally sat outside where they were exposed to the elements year-round. -- Restorations tend to be garaged hangar queens that don't see snow, salt, or rain on a regular or even irregular basis. If you plan on: -- Owning the car another fifty years (!) -- Driving it another 150,000 miles (!) -- Keeping it outside in the sun, rain, wind, and snow (!) then sure, maybe a vinyl top isn't for you. But otherwise, if you want original and like the look -- go for it.
The original color was red, also reading the plate is says Code 52. The 64 Galaxie was $1000 and I put another $1000 into it getting it back on the road. I did actually like the Galaxie a lot but I wish it was a 2 door. I still want to own another one eventually but I couldn't pass up the 69. The galaxie had great patina. Was a 352 4 bbl car , 4 door post car.
Yeah.... it was too bad Ford didnt produce the numbers of 2 doors the 4 door had. You made out like a banshee on that deal IMHO! This guy has a nice 2 door hardtop... IIRC a 427 FE with a 4 speed. Theresa few dorfs out there that get to me. Dodges are still off my board LOL... The Fairlanes and even the Falcons are OK... Had to toss one in for Luke.. Dig them wheels daddio!!! ws ws
