    I got new nuts!

Mitch sent me out a set of the acorn top stainless lugs and they are beautiful. The thing that was an unexpected surprise was the precision with which they threaded onto the studs. I had no idea the old ones were so sloppy.
Makes me feel a lot safer during those :3gears: Highly recommended! :beer

Make sure your jack handle fits the lug nuts.... you may have to carry an extra breaker bar (4 way) with you incase you have a flat.... :af: :af:

    Factory "capped" rally lugnuts...
    Just a little something I learned 20 years ago & pertains to at least '70 (probably '69) -72 Chevelles, Elco's, Monte's, Novas & all '71-72 Pontiac A, F, G, & X bodys with rally wheels...

There were two varietys of 7/16" capped rally lugnuts used on the above GM cars. Am sure I've pulled the 1st style off Buicks & Olds offerings as well, but my focus was, & always has been in pulling NICE correct coded & dated Pontiac RallyII's, & the nicest "tall cap" lugnuts out there, so ID'ing what was correct on a '71-72 GS or '71-72 442 was not near as important to me.

    First variety...
I've always called the "tall cap" variety, as the stamped cap measures .450" from the top of the hex to the end of the slightly pointed cap. Have litterally pulled dozens of these in niear perfect shape since '86, since learning what was avail @ the dealer was wrong. GM part # was #399683 (same as in Davids above '69+ info!) Unfortunately this style capped lugnut has been disco'ed for 32 years, so no NOS! (I ran trackers on this nut many times in the late 80's & have cleaned out quite a few dealer stocks.) This variety of stamped steel "capped" lugnut has been documented as original on late '70 Chevelle SS wheels code AO (I'd bet '69-early '70 YA's as well), & on all '71 & '72 Chevy & Pontiac Rally wheels with 7/16" studs, & on all '71-72 Pontiac's with factory honeycomb wheels. By the 1/73 dated Pontiac MPC, this part number was GONE... & MPC's show a '64-73 useage for the next style capped rally lugnut... From 25 years of parting on GM A & F-bodys , this later style was DEFiNITELY used on '73 GM models. One can say that the later "short" cap style is DEF a service replacement for the earlier "tall cap" variety & not Concours correct!!!.

Note: Up until about 7 years ago, one did not have much of a choice in what was avail new. At about that time, the early "tall cap" style of capped lugnut was repro'ed by Ted William Chevrolet Parts. Ted Williams has been out of these in the past, & only sells through authorized dealers, not retail.

    2nd variety...
'73+ "short" cap variety, GM part #358501. This style was introduced for all GM '73 models, & one can easily spot the difference in appearance to the earlier style. This style of stamped cap lugnut was used extensively up through '81 (at least to the onset of metric studs), & was avail through GM dealers at least into the late '90's.

A question for those with original '71-72 GS's with rally wheels, & those with original dated (not the bound '82 dated) Buick MPC's, & Skylark-GS assembly manuals: "Why not the same lugnuts as above, on same era ('71-72) Buick A-bodys with rally wheels. After all many were built out of out of the same assembly plants..."???

This is a real old thread but if someone see my post..... The ones on the left were on my 70 442 that was a 62,000k barn find sitting since 1978. I am confused if these came on my car or if someone put them on. What size socket are these? Mine are 13/16, my lug wrench is 3/4. If you know anything about 442's You know that the SS1 (chevelle type) wheels had a weird little hold down nut on the spare. It is also 3/4" Why would they give you two different size lugs? You would be stuck on the road. If they gave you a 13/16 lug wrech then you couldn't take off the nut on the spare. See? any help would be appreciated.
