    O.K. Lets make it more confusing. What are the proper lugs for the 71-72 Super Sport Wheels? These are the steel painted wheels with chrome trim rings. Did they use the same acorn lugs.

    OK Guys,
    This is what I know;
    The "Acorn style" rounded top lug nuts are correct for all 70-72 buick A-bodies regardless of whether you had 14" or 15" Chrome, or 14" (70, and 71-72) Sport wheels.

    Now I "assume" that the same "Acorn style" lug nut was also used in 69 cars, but some say it was the flat top style. (At one time I actually sold some flat top style lugs as 69's, per other's suggestions.)

    I also know people that swear the "Acorn style" lugs are correct for 67's, so I don't know what to think.
    Therefore, for the 64-69 buicks, I have no definative answer.

    Now, getting back to what I know;
    I do know that the flat top style were correct for some year Chevrolets, but have no idea what years they were used.

    And I know that the last GM NOS lugs were not flat topped, but had a very slighty pointy top. I don't know what part number they used, but do know they are not correct for any of our cars.

    Now, this brings up another thing, that I have talked about many times before. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT PARTS ARE CORRECT FOR YOUR CARS, LOOK AT THE ORIGINAL PARTS, NOT WHAT SOME PARTS BOOK TELLS YOU. (How's that for yelling.)

    There is a problem with parts books. First off, GM as well as other manufacturers, sometimes changed the part, but retained the same part number. Other times they substituted different parts, but then updated the part number. You need to look at the "Date" of the parts book to determine how accurate the part numbers in it are. The 68 Parts books are great for 68 cars. They were printed in 68 and all the numbers seem to match with the numbers in the assembly manuals. If there is a parts book for 70-72 cars, but it was published in 85, then how many parts substitutions were made by 85?

    On another thread (last year) we talked about frame numbers. The parts book listed a 70 frame with a 72 part number. The reason was because the book was published in 72, so it carried the part number for the part that was "currently" in production, namely a 72 frame. If the book was published after 72 it would probably still carry the 72 number because that was the last version available. These parts books were developed for "replacement parts", and were not designed to be used to gauge originality.

    Now I know the guys with the parts books go out of their way to help, and that they help us find many needed pieces for our cars, but you cannot always assume that a part, with the correct "part number" on the box, is the correct piece, many times it isn't.

    I had my 69 Stage 1 since 71 and still have some of the original lug nuts on it.
    They were the acorn style on the left BUT were not solid. They 100% definitely are capped nuts.
    Sometime around 73 I bought new ones and they too were capped and acorn style.
    I can't assume for sure, but would bet that at least 69-72 were the acorn capped style.
    A 79 LeSabre that I bought new in December of 78 had the "mag" style on the right and they too were capped and not solid. I still have the wheels and lug nuts from that car and that is what they still are.
    My 67 which I got in 81 had acorn style solid nuts, but I can only guess if they are original or not. My guess is they were solid and not capped. But again, who knows.
    Duane is 100% correct. GM superceded parts all the time and either kept or changed the p/n as they saw fit. So, who knows what the replacement parts could be.
    Back to the 69's, I would be 99.999% certain that the acorn capped nuts are correct. But there is always the chance that the factory ran out of them and sent the plant gopher to "Speed King" to buy some nuts to get cars done that day.
    Just my take on it,

    I believe these are the one's Duane is referring to. They are sleeved.

    Yeah--I was under the impression that the GM cars used the stainless steel capped lugs on all their sport wheels (except for some GTO's that had a completely different looking lug). Those solid, one piece chromed ones are not correct for original.

    The stainless capped ones are available repro just about anywhere you look--Olds, Chevy, etc repro vendors. I think there is a slight difference between the repros and the originals. Patton

    Would you be interested in sending me one of your originals. I have a friend that owns a production machine shop and would like to get a quote on reproducing the correct style of lug nut in solid stainless. I would then post what we need to make a run and what the cost would be.

    Dave,
    How nice a one do you need? I have some buried somewhere that are not on my car as they were a bit abused by air guns over the years.
    I can look around for a decent one, but would rather not give up one of the good ones on the car.
    You can PM me or email at dcm422@aol.com if you like. I will also be at Englishtown for the Labor Day weekend.
    Now I just have to find where I put them.

    Stainless lug nuts

    Doug,

    I can send you one of the lug nuts for you to take a look at. If you don't like what you seem you can send it back. If you want a set, I'll mail you 19 more. Let me know.

    These definitely have a round top and are not flat. However, they are only RH threads. Do you have LH threads on your car?

    You may email me at mitchromanowski@sbcglobal.net

    crunny capped lug nuts

    I've also got the 1/2" solid stainless steel lug nuts if anyone would like to replace their capped versions. The 1/2" also is "acorn" style with rounded top. Will send you a sample, if interested. I've sold many sets at swap meets. These polished stainless replacements really look very nice.

    The #414188 nut is capped with stainless steel so it has a different appearance. It should be easy to find since it was used on Chevy as well as B-O-P, may still be available from the general.
