Most seem to start with the Olds Vintage Air kit. I think there is a Board member making brackets. There is a thread on the bracket issue.
If it originally came with air and some of the components are still there, it is not that hard (mostly need the ac box on the firewall, controls in the cabin, and compressor brackets... everything else you can buy new). If it never did, it would require a lot of parts.
I put factory air in a 77 Pontiac Sunbird. Tough job but worked way better than the dealer installed air it was delivered with. For cars that did not come with factory AC, generally they were without tinted windows as well. I would recommend you find a donor somewhere so you can get all the little parts - relays, brackets, harness, etc. I would use a ‘71 or ‘70 since they didn’t use the thermal limiter switch that is problematic
No, because it requires a lot of parts to buy additionally. If using a '71 or '70, they would definitely need an aircon chemical wash. Thye would blow heat instead of cool air and vice versa. My brother went through this, and he couldn't figure out why. Maybe a part is was missing, or perhaps it's not suitable. Indeed, it was just bad cleaned filters.
Many people think that if they buy an air conditioner, they should just go ahead and get one. The problem is that most of the people that buy these air conditioners never take the time to learn how to take care of them properly or to figure out which model they should get. They also don’t realize that there are different kinds of air conditioners and that some work better than others in certain situations. I can advise you to read on socool.sg all the necessary information to help you take care of your A/C.
Best way is to find all the original factory stuff and install it or that is the way I would do it. It is not that hard to do if you get all the right pieces.
