Chicagoland member Tom Rix has a small valve super stock (I think) car that runs deep in the 10's.

My friend Steve South runs low twelves with his small valve headed 455 (in a sharp purple GSX clone). Not sure about all the specs on it but I do know he runs a BIG TA solid cam. With an automatic I think he ran 11.70s. The car now has a 5 speed manual in it...the twelves were with the 5 speed. I think he has a 3.73 rear gear in it At the Nats last year, it made approx. 417 rwhp on the chassis dyno that was down there. He let me drive it and it is BRUTAL! (and fun! Thanks again Steve:grin: )

I think you'll find the only fast small valve head Buicks are people who have to run them per the rules. You should look at some the NHRA Stockers. I think Lyn Smith's 71 GS is a small valve motor and he was runnning in G/SA. So he's probably in the mid-elevens. The Stocker Stage 1 motors got hit with alot of factored horsepower because they were so popular in the eary years. I heard someone recently was building a '70 Stage 1, 4-spd and it will end up in D/S.

I don't know Tom Rix personally, but he was running in SS/KA before the Top Stock deal. I think he was running around 10.80's with the SS motor. I think the SS motor was a Stage 1, though. I do know his Top Stock motor is a Stage 2 head. He was running 10.30's in Top Stock last year.

If anybody has more detail, feel free to chime in. I try to follow Stock and Super Stock as much as I can, but I can't keep up with everybody.

We run a 1977 Skylark with stock 1970 heads. The car is 3450 lbs. with me in it [ Bowling Green scales ] 455, KB107 cam, sp1 intake, TA roller rockers, switch pitch 3000 stall converter, holley dominator carb, 9:85 compression, 4.10 gears. The car ran 11.34 at Bowling Green last year in the heat. The best time to date is 11.14 @ 119 mph at the Buick race in Norwalk last year. We are going to upgrade to the TA stage 2 heads, and their 608 cam. Any ideas on what the car will run with those two modifacations?

    QuikBuik Yeah, it's Buick powered

I've got small valve heads on the roadster. Doesn't take much to push a frame with slicks and skinnies. :Brow:

    Tim,

how is it i am NOT surprised that you spoke up here,,,, ,,,,,, you have to remember that i have seen your car run and it doesn't weigh as much as a set of nice buckets out of a g.s....:pp .... glad you chimed in here though. and by the way.........you deep into the 6's yet.???? that turn left phase gone ? seriously now ...what did you ever find out about the t-brake ? don't remember you ever telling us......

A set? It probably doesn't weigh as much as one. Right now it's doing ok, running straight as a string. The transbrake problem was the solenoid, just like all you guys told me. So far the best it's run is 5.84 at 113 in the 1/8. As for the 1/4, the conversion formulas tell me 9.07 at 141, but I'll believe it when I see it.......
