    1972Mach1 Just some M.M.O.G. guy.....

I'm sure most of us have held pistons out of a typical small or big block V8 in our hands. Just thought it'd be interesting for the guys on here to see what's powering the typical crossover/SUV/car nowadays. This is the block of a turbo 1.4L that's in many GMs. I'm 5'9" but I've got hands about the size of a regular 6' guy. Under all the plastic and B.S. you see in a new vehicle engine compartment is a 4 cylinder I can dang near pick up and carry by myself. Pretty amazing.

    Well that's a cute Lil feller of a block....:D:D

But yeah Lucas, that is educational. When you compare these to our beloved old school stuff, it's definitely....uhhh.....errr.... "Refined".

The real deal is, there really is something to be said for modern drivelines. The LS needs no introduction obviously, it's superior in about every way. Deal with it. But the ones that aren't the current hotroders belle of the ball are still usually pretty impressive in their own right. Wifeys 2.0 turbo Malibu gave my Hemi Ram all it wanted and then some when we lined up near the house one night. My 3 series BMW will pull to 135 like it's nothing and beg for more. Do I think the green car could take it in the 1/4? Probably. But hulk doesn't have a/c and heated seats.... It'd never replace my old school stuff, but there's certainly some merit to the technology and advancements in current cars.

Thanks for sharing its amazing how well they perform when everything is working and they don't look like your pictures. Curious what's the mileage and reason for the tear down. What kind of bill are they looking at? If you don't mind sharing. ;)

Here's a 390 Ford piston for reference. And remember, there's 8 of 'em.

Not many. We've got a little "cylinder head induced misfire". Won't cost them a dime.

So still under warranty? Did this cause a check engine light or just a miss ? I consider myself lucky to never have had a new car torn down to this degree.

It is amazing these little 4 bangers can generate so much power (with multi turbos or a supercharge) & still exist in one piece!!

STAGE III Lost Experimental 455-4 Bolt Main Block.

I’ll never forget back in the day when a salesman insisted I just had to drive a brand new Black on red Turbo 4 banger stick shift Super Chicken T-Bird for 24 hours.
I was NOT pleased to get saddled with that but they didn’t have the Yamaha powered SHO Taurus sleeper in stock I had researched & really wanted to flog for a possible company car.
Now obviously the T-bird was not a total track star but I had it on one of my back roads taking a left and figured I needed to give her all she had in a gradual left I was very familiar with drifting my GS’s through so I gave her all she had and power shifted into 2nd prepared for a tire chirp and POSSIBLY a small tail wag.
Uh....naw....this thing was pulling pretty damn impressively and when I didn’t back out of it & hit 2nd it took me for a ride doing a full 360 in the wide rural intersection.
I swallowed my heart back down outta my throat shifted back up into 1st laid down more rubber and got the hell outta there but with a new respect for “4 bangers”!
A few years later I bought a black on red, turbo charged,4 cylinder, stick shift Volvo wagon for my wife.
I suggested my buddy and I take the wife’s car out for a nearby errand, he wasn’t thrilled to be getting seen rolling in a family wagon but was impressed with the comfortable interior, sunroof, jam system etc etc.
Well we got out on the highway and had a slow poke we were advancing on and my buddy looked behind us and said “Naw, you are screwed the guy in the fast lane is gonna block you” just the predicament I was looking for heh heh
He panicked when he saw me lean forward to check the gap and prepare to downshift.”No no noooo you can’t make that Fritz!”.
Well,I shifted down and stood on that sucker and we rocketed through the gap and that thing was pulling hard leaving mister fast lane in the dust.
Calming down now a little my buddy said “Damn man, I didn’t know they made these with v-8’s! heh heh.
He couldn’t believe his eyes when I popped the hood later! “WHAAAAAT?!!!!”:D
That said though I will never be cured of my addiction to the raw, gut clinching, loud and proud power of a big block Buick with the Quadrajet secondaries flapped wide open boiling the tires and making passengers turn white as ghosts.
I’ve know it is considered slow these days but I know just how far I can push a GS to the edge & I have seen friends over the years with modern muscle that “drives like it is on rails” compared with my GS but I feel those can give a false sense of security as one younger friend keep telling us his increasing speed through a hairpin curve as he reported constantly his new record.
I warned him “Yeh, it feels like it is stuck to the road or on rails but when that muther finally breaks loose it is going to happen faster than you can react bud.
About a month later his hairpin test trials were completed and what was left of his car was behind his locked garage door after it broke loose and took him 4 wheeling.
So I still feel more confident in a controlled drift in an old school musclecar where I can feel what’s going on before all hell breaks loose, but just my humble but lovable opinion.

    GIT SIDEWAYZ SON!!!!!:eek::D

Sad but true what Shawn said, the new cars run damn good for the little pee pee engines they have, no doubt about that:cool:
    Technology has definitely helped.
But I've noticed these engines, LS included, lack the low end torque the old school small and big blocks had, seems they're all hell bent on RPMo_O

I can’t speak on LS motors, but the throttle sensitivity and low end torque on my 392 HEMI is bonkers. AKA Fog Machine....Pop Smoke

Bwahahaha :D.....yeah, it sounds impressive until I tell you the reason I have 6' tall guy's hands and am only 5'9" is because I was 5'11"ish until I broke my back. Now I'm a hunched over short guy and have gangsta swagger but it's just the way I walk.
