I am looking for a 3.73 or 4.11 gear set for a 72 Riviera which still has the factory 9 3/8 rear. anyone out there that could point me in the right direction would be a big help. Also does anyone make an aftermarket spider gear set up for this rear end?

Thanks in advance for any info.

There are no aftermarket parts for the 9 3/8 rears unfortunately. The best gears you'll find on these cars is a 3.42 (realistically), and you'll be lucky to find one for less than $56u3873947903793047k....

If you intend on getting 4.11 gears, then you'll probably need to find a rear end that will accept that tall gear and modify it to fit your car.

ah, and here is one of those unfortunate things that got lost in the sticky thread wipe.

the full size GM cars came with 9 3/8" rear ends. they also came with 8 7/8" and 8 1/2" assemblies. now, nobody make parts for the 8 7/8" rears either but if you can find an 8 1/2" rear end assembly you can put virtually any ratio or carrier you want in it because everybody makes those parts.

i wouldn't recommend it for drag racing use but for everyday driving with a little hotfooting every so often it works just fine.

THanks for that bob...I had thought about saying something about it, but figured I would confuse even myself, if not the rest of the board:laugh:

I'm also weary of putting an 8.5 behind a big car with a 455....a healthy one.

hey, i haven't broken my 8 1/2" yet and i was circle tracking 71 electra 4 door (bored .30 over). or maybe i should say i broke a half shaft because i blew a tire coming out of turn 4 and i slapped the wall. nothing power related though.

drag strip use would be a bit more extreme than what i'm doing.
