Bought this posi carrier off the board from a well respected member a few years ago. Out of a VistaCruiser wagon, 90ish?
    Info off carrier:
    Patents
    US 4612825
    Canada 1987
    ---------
    R 5 3
    10 MO Y
Assuming this is the date code, not positive about the 5, which I assume is the momth of build.
    ---------
    On side of carrier:
    X019 > <12

The first part from the left reads upside down on carrier and actually reads 610X, if ya get my drift....

supposed to be a three series (planning on either 3.42s or 3.73s),
    30 spline
Was looking for any info and perhaps a parts list needed to install carrier in my 71' 8.5 (70 Skylark).....
I am assuming (ya , I use the word too much, but I am looking for help so I can stop assuming..) that I will have to order custom 30 spline axles from Moser. Can I order using stock 28 spline measurements or has someone else gone this route already and knows/has axle measurements?
Any information /advice/help is always greatly appreciated......Jim/Rott

That is an Auburn posi unit that came in a lot of 90’s GM cars. They came in the Caprice/Impala rears. I serviced a lot of the local police axles that were under those cars, and they all had those.
What are your intentions with your car?
It is a good street unit, but it won’t hold up under a bunch of power and abuse.
Yes,you would just take all of the specs from your existing 28-spline axle, and order a 30-spline version. They will be about $460-ish,for the axle shafts,HD retainer plates, wheel studs,an access hole, and shipping from Moser. If you want to purchase the axle bearings & seals from them, that will be an additional cost. I install my own.
The correct bearings to install the larger hub posi units into the older housings is LM102949(bearing),and LM102911(race)

I plan on Streetnite at New England Dragway every couple of weeks. Best of 13.38@102.52 before they closed the track for the year. Next years goal is to drop into the 12s. Car weighs 3627, no driver.
Running stock 28 spline axles and a 2 series original cone style posi with a spacer to run 3.42s. Definitely, my weak link are the axles now. Didn't think removing the stock TC (auto) and upgrading to a JW TC would be wise til I upgraded axles/carrier. Pretty confident that further tweaking of carb, JW TC, running skinnies up front and going from 3.42s to 3.73s will get me in the 12s.
Thanks so much for providing the Moser ordering form, that's perfect. I couldn't tell if the 1/2x20 part #8000? are press-in or screw-in. I have only dealt with press-ins before. Do you have a preference?
Thanks again for you help and advice Brian, Jim/Rott

You can get whatever axle studs you want. I just happen to have the big studs on that sheet.
Currently, your week link is that posi. Those factory 28-spline shafts will hold up under a car like that running into the 11:70 range.

not that I would tell anyone to do it I ran my stk axles into the 10.90s in a 3800 race weight car on a transbrake........shhhhh dont tell.......now I did once I started getting into the 11 teens start to see twisting.......I rotated shafts with my tires every 25-35 passes. this is what they looked like this summer when i put 30 spline b4 we put the bigger motor in

I figure the 3 series 30 spline has to be somewhat of an improvement over the 2 series 28 spline with a spacer . No?

It is still a cone style unit. However,Auburn did/does offer a rebuilding service for those.

Maybe, I'll run what I have for next season and save up for an Eaton 3 series and Moser axles down the road. If it grenades, I will use this Auburn as a backup. Thanks for replies/advice all....

I think you need to know the condition of the GM Auburn unit you have also. We ran into a lot of those units in wagons and impalas and by the time we got them in the yards they were bottomed out.
Take it apart and look at the cone bottoms and see what you see. THey should only be rubbing on the conical surface NOT the bottom of the cone . You can post pictures. NOT going to be easy getting the preload springs back in though so it is your call.
As we always say 28 or 30 spline axles in the race alloy from Moser will cost the same... But I would always upgrade to 30, it is a no brainer.

ALL the same bearing kit will fit the 30 spline 1990-1996 car posi units only in 1999 ish did they start the 8.625 limited slip units in GM which were the G80 Auto locker truck units. 8.625 carriers used the A36 set bearings (same as 12 bolt chevy) 8.5 even 30 spline were regular 10 bolt carrier bearing and another down fall to the 90 - 99 era 8.5 rears. They opened up the carrier hub to fit the 30 spline axle BUT did not leave enough hub thickness where the bearing presses on and is another WEAK point when high torque and heat happen.
I remember doing tions of GM 90's trucks and vans coming in with the carrier bearings sheared clean of the carrier... Takes out the ring pinion and posi and sometimes the caps.

For a 13.30 car even a mid 12 sec car it will work...IF it is in good condition. IF....

I can rebuild those units but they are a bit tricker than the old 2 piece side gear cone units. Sometime the cone material that the side gear is pressed into will literally split and if that happens the unit is JUNK. NO fixing that unless you have another cone.

All good stuff Jim, thanks. Seeing how the plan now is to use this as a back-up,
I'll pull it apart and check on cone condition and go from there. I'm in no rush, but when I get it apart, I'll take pictures and post them here......
    Thanks again all, Jim/Rott
