    Hi all,

I know the 70-72 BB transmissions are special due to their unique valve body. Is a "78 BB" (trans tag) anything special? Is it an olds/Pontiac and not a buick?

    Thanks,

BB will always be a Buick transmission. In 78, it went behind the 350 in the Electra and Riviera. Not the same as the 70-72 BB. Nothing special really.

FWIW my buddy who's been rebuilding transmissions since the 70s claims the Buick TH350s have the oversize drum that holds an extra steel and friction VS the standard Chevy/Pontiac/Olds TH350s.

mine had a 77 bb code and when i blew it up and went to rebuild, the sprag blew....it had the crappy 8 element sprag, you cant upgrade to better sprag without replacing that drum....just an fyi.

Yes you have to swap the drum too. All my transmissions have been reconditioned and 9 element
sprags eliminated, before failure. Bruce Roe
