72 SunCoupe. One wire alternator. Regulator gone. Crispy insulation.

    Hi all..
    Ugh,, I should take up fishing as a hobby.
    A simple carb swap turned into replacing spark plug wires and plugs. Pretty simple huh?
    Read on.
    The 72 been upgraded to a one wire alternator by the late, great John Kemper.. No electrical problems.
    I'm installing the new set of plug wires (I highly recommend the date coded wires made by Lectric Limited, a perfect fit) while under the hood, I notice the red 10 ga. power wire going to the alternator is in the way, and looks a little frazzled, I move it and the insulation cracks.
    I begin removing the tape from the harness that lays across the intake looking for good flexible insulation. I trace the red 10 ga. power wire, from the alternator lug to a non-factory splice. This splice contains 3 red 10 ga. wires, headed towards the firewall, spliced to two red 10 ga. wires- one of the two goes to the alternator lug, the other heads behind the alternator down to the starter.
    One of the three 10 gauge wires in the splice comes from, or goes to, the plug for the missing voltage regulator.

    My question is, can I leave this wire for the missing voltage regulator disconnected? IE, not include it with the repairs I'm going to make to the harness?
    I ask because I've heard of an "exciter" wire but know nothing about it.
    Just to be clear, the plug for the missing voltage regulator is not plugged into anything, nor do I see any jumpers between the plugs terminals.
    A simple job has kept the SunCoupe parked for longer that I like.

    I soldered all the wires back where I found them.

    Solder all the wires back together, as stated above.
