That sounds like it's running lean, causing a surge..... I think you need to really work with Larry on the timing issue?!
well I drove it around for a bit, then on HWY for a little bit then the same small trek back home to the drive. I let it idle for bit it heated to about 190. I attached the vac adv to the front mani port, could not hear a hiss, loud exhaust. But put my finger over it and suction was there. Put vac adv to that, NO idle change at all. Temps stayed at 190 prob because the clutch/fan was doing it's part and it was only about 80 out and overcast. Sounds like I have a bad vac adv device or worse?
Could this be related to it stumbling a lot from a stop till it is at running temps? The choke does hold when I start it but till it is really at runnning temps it stumbles when I hit the gas.
That is what I thought, bad vacuum advance canister. Yes. The shop that adjusted the timing should have checked that as well as the mechanical advance.
Looks like HEI needs 8mm wires? I just put in 7 after looking at them. And HEI, plugs should be gapped at .40, I am at .35
Why don't you just put a vacuum advance in it. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog...9707,ignition,distributor+vacuum+advance,7232
I bought one back when these issues were a problem last fall. Still in the box. I figured why not just upgrade to HEI (100 bucks for unit from TA since I don't how old the electronic ign in it is. Those being questions asked of me last year when the over heating started possible to timing issues.
The big cap HEI's aren't so easy to just drop in. I think this TA distributor is a better choice, http://www.taperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TA_725B
Ahhh, I was at this point locked in on HEI and did not see those. I am just going to buy it and run with a whole new set up.
Now if only I could get the air snorkel flapper to work, stiff as a rusty bolt, with the hose from intake vac port to the air cleaner. For another day.
