With temperatures rising I found myself comfortable starting to wrench on my car.
With two helping hands of a good friend this is what we achieved today...

I am still unsure whether to love or hate it...

    more pictures will follow...

It's a love/hate relationship. Told my wife about once every couple of weeks when restoring the GS that "I hate that car." I was able to restrain myself and never threw a wrench through the windshield (although I did do it once right after I accidentally cracked an original perfect windshield). Spent most of my time enjoying it though.

Yep, there are still times I want lightning to strike and burn the green car to the ground. It's unbelievable how many times that cars has gone from creating pure excitement to soul crushing. Hence why it's still sitting in the barn on the lift halfway through May...

    So you are not alone.

Well seems that I have a 70 head on the right and a 72 on the left from what I found on the forum....
starting to hate it more than loving it...

those heads differ in combustion chamber size right?

I have a stuck 73 engine in the basement. Are those heads of any use?

The 73 heads are gonna be a closer match to the 72's with A.I.R. porting, but the intake passages are different from the 1970. Hmmm. I think the 72's did not have an EGR valve and the 73's did. That period was the advent pollution controls, and GM was grabbing at straws.

The core support at least has enough shape left to duplicate as a pattern. The inner fender has a repair piece available. Dont forget to scrape all the seam filler off the cowl and re-do that too. ws

DEADMANSCURVE my first word : truck

someone will have a more exact answer but :
70-72 heads probably pretty close or identical .
73 heads may be EGR versions and dif . check the intake gasket area too on those .
if you do a quick measurement/visual check on combustion chambers , port sizes , valve sizes and seems the same probably good to go .
edit : still can't type fast enough .

Thanks for the reply. Yes my 73 Engine in the cellar has an EGR intake (the EGR valve is still present. I wont use them. I will need two matching heads...what about 69 400 heads...would they fit?

right now I am tearing down the engine in the cellar. It is very low mileage but has 2 stuck pistons, corrosion from water and probably bad core shift. I will definitly use the crank of it and the timing cover wich looks great.

Inner fenders and core support will go to the sandblaster.

Next step is to remove the engine from the car and tear it down.

    Here are some pics:

Can anyone identify this converter? Got it with the 71 OW Trans but it was not installed.
Is the 71 OW Th400 a switch pitch trans? It has a Buick VIN on the side.

Once pulled the head off a 400 Pontiac that made your rust look like nothing. Had so much rust build up around the lifters and springs that you couldn't even tell there were lifters or springs under it (it was caked on). It tanked up nice though and cleaned up good enough to still use. Your push rod might need replacing though :)
