While I was moving my fenders to storage, I noticed two small, factory-like holes per fender southeast of the Stage 1 emblems. These are not badge holes. The holes are at least seven inches apart. Are these holes for body side moldings? My Dad's 72 had studs (vs. holes) to hold the moldings on. The holes were bondo'd over by the former owner so I never noticed them before. What gives? o No:
What secures the remainder of the moldings? Studs? I image they have been ground off. Did the factory have two types of door skins? o No:
those moldings were held on by studs and clips. My assembly manual shows two clips bolted through the front fender under the stage 1 emblem. I cannot find a specific diagram for the doors, but I know they had one hole at the aft end for the clips that screwed through the panel....the rest were studs with clips. The rear quarters I could not find a specific diagram, but I have pictures showing the molding removed..it had two clips on studs and one hole for the clip with the screw at the aft end. If you need the studs replaced, a good body will have the tool that welds them on, they look identical to factory. Not sure if they had two different skins or a tool that added the studs for doors/quarters destined to have the moldings. later Tim
The NOS fenders I have do not have the holes I mention. I wonder if a line worker added them or there were two variety of fenders. hmmmm. My orginal fenders, problems and all, sound like the way to go. BTW - does anyone have pictures of a Stage 1 with body side moldings? Thanks guys for your replies! :TU:
If I cannot find NOS or perfect used these may not find their way back on her . The beltline chrome is also a cause for consternation JK
Thanks for posting pix John. I would be interested to see the car with the moldings removed so I can gauge the stud locations. I hope the A body moldings are easier to find than my Apollos pieces. Someone's grocery cart has sure caused me some grief. Great car BTW! :TU:
Only one fender, doorskin, qtr panel. If you needed holes or stud to put mouldings on you must add them yourself just as line workers did if the moulding option was ordered on the car.Doors had a hole in each end for a clip and studs welded on in between.
