I understand that but reason i am asking is,i have a stock bellhousing 4-speed that is and so i wont have to go looking for a nailhead bellhousing to switch to 4-speed set up,thats why i asked if theres an adaptor. Thanks
Would the input shaft of a manual trans seat in the crankshaft with the added thickness of an adapter? You would also need a universal BOP bell housing as the Nailhead needs bell housing clearance for the starter on the left like Olds and Pontiac, and you know the BBB bell housings were clearanced on the right for the starter. Have not been on the board in a long time, glad to be back. Anyway, saw this post and have to comment. I spoke to RodNRacin about 3 years ago about this. Pro is that the price is right, approx $295. Con is that the tranny has to be tilted which affects floor shift, etc. I also checked into the tranny adapters coming out of Ham Lake, MN. Nice stuff but $795 for the kit. My 65 GS currently has the stock 401/SP400 combo. But I am in the process of building a mild 425/dual quad setup for the car. I am considering a Gear Vendors OD unit. Seems to be the easiest alternative but not cheap at $2,200. But if you consider the cost of an adapter, built 700R4, converter and fab time for TV cable price may be a wash. Just my .02
ST400 gears I think the gear vendor unit is the hot set up. The modern OD trannies gears are too spread out for me, the ST400 has the best ratios. Set up a ST400 with Gear vendor OD and 3.91:1 rear end would be my choice. The fact that Bill Burton is doing this set up in his 65 Wildcat 455 car impressed me too!
Re: Adapter how do you do this? I just put in a s/p 400 with a pae4000 converter and I cant use the s/p for anything other than taking off, when I flip the switch at say 60 it starts stalling.
To elaborate on what Rob said, with the wide spread between high and low stall of your nailhead it probably wouldn't work very well. Plus, the modifications made to make that converter stall so high makes it slip more instead of multiplying torque. If you have it in your nailhead, I would thing that unless you are cammed pretty wild, it is probably too much converter for it. It would probably like a milder converter. As far as I know, everyone running a switch pitch has only used high stall for the launch and turned it to low-stall at the 30-60' mark. I'd sure like someone to share their results with doing something different.....
What about the JW Ultrabell? I put that forward on the yahoo nailhead group and they seemed think that JW wouldn't make one. I think we should all just flood JW whoever they are with a torrent of emails to prove just how big of a market there is for making a Nailhead to Cheby Ultrabell. My plan for chaos,
