About how much should my '70 Skylark weigh? It is a 455 with th400, no a/c, no power steering, no power brakes. I just had a new motor built (545 hp) and I am trying to figure out what it will run. I will be using one of Jim Burek's switch pitch converters with about 4500 high stall and 3.73-4.10 gears. Any guesses on the weight or E.T.?

    Thanks.

cray1801 Too much is just right.

After playing with the numbers (w/good suspension, 3900 lbs. w/driver) I'll be conservative and guess you should be at least this fast after tuning:

    11.6 @ 112 mph, with a 7.5's in the 1/8 th.

    Let us know!

Hopefully it runs better than that. It ran 12.50 @110mph with the old motor! The old motor had TRW forged pistons, Poston 113 cam, Edelbrock intake, Holley 850 dp, headers and stock '70 small valve heads with only a valve job. The new motor is 11 to 1, .600 lift solid cam, Jim Burek ported stage 1 heads, port matched T/A intake, 850 Holley, T/A roller rockers. My '87 Turbo Regal with ported heads and TA49 turbo ran a best of 11.76 @ 115.76. I was hoping to run very low 11's or high 10's with the '70. Is this unrealistic? I don't have it back in the car yet so all I can do is bench race it!

cray1801, What wheels are on your car in your avatar? Nice looking car.

I did'nt want to get your hopes up too high but I think your goal is acheivable. I had two calculations figured; calc. one - HP at flywheel times 80% for HP (436 HP) at the drive wheels gave -->(11.6 @112) and calc. two - inputing the HP #'s directly (545 HP) into the calculations (10.6 @ 121). I can't remember which number should be used for the P/W and W/P calculations for my book. I assumed 3900 lbs in both cases.

    Here's my wheel/tire combination
    - 255/60R-15 T/A radial out back mounted on 9" Crager Ind. racing wheels with 5" back spacing.
    - 235/60R 15"'s in front on the same type wheels/tires, 8" rim

Bench racing is fun, what input on this has Jim B given?

It's kinda hard to say without knowing the weight of the car. It has enough power to get into the 10's if you get the power to the ground. It should run easy 11's without breking a sweat. Jim Burek

I've weighed both cars using the truck scales at the county landfill, they were happy to let me do it for no charge. GS curb weight is 3860#, A/C, power windows, spare and jack in trunk. The Rivi blimps out at 4250#.

:Comp: Hi Ken, Have you considered going to a larger carb on your new motor? I went from a 850 to a 1050 on mine and it made a big difference with less compression and smaller cam than what you have. Tom

Hey Tom, How much time did you pick up with the carb change? Also could you list your combo, and the weight of your car?The numbers you run are what I would be looking for:beer Thanks

:Comp: I have never weighed my car but I think it is about 3800 to 3900 lbs. I have home ported heads with a poston 105A cam KB roller rockers TA 1125 springs sealed power forged pistons compression checked out to be 9.6 a TA intake with old 1050 holley dominator KB 2" pulse headers with 18 inch extentions ran open when I race a B/M 10" converter about 3600to 3800 stall 4.10 gears with 29.5/10.5 mickey tompson slicks I also have a old stinger distributer and a holley ignition box. I don't know exactly how much I gained going from the 850 to the 1050 but I think it was in the 1.5 to 2 tenths area, I don't have the 850 anymore to do a back to back test. When I changed carbs I had a KB intake modified so the 850 or the 1050 would fit, since then I have a TA intake so the 850 would no longer fit with out an adapter. I also have a stage2 scoop on my car so I can run a 5" high air cleaner. I think that helps to but I don't know how much. I also don't know if the new 950 carbs would be better than the old 1050 but at least you would not have to change intakes to run one. I don't have the money to buy a new carb so I am stuck with what I have.
