70 Skylark original gears. What will fit?

Good afternoon all. I have a 1970 Skylark with the original 350 wide block and I'm assuming the original gears. My question is can I drop on a 4.10 out of a trans am or camaro into the housing. I'm only asking because I'm building a 400 sbc with 906 vortec heads to replace the original factory engine.
    Thanks Nick B

No the only donors are 68 - 70 Buick 8.2”.

The only repros are Fabcraft 3.64 and 3.42 ratios.

Regular 8.2 BOPs do not fit.

Id like a 3.42 minimum for the 400 sbc. Thank you. And I have 2 rear ends. The original is still under the car and the other is a 72 model.

    Nick,

You would probably be better off finding a 71 and later corporate rear. There are better choices for gears and posi units.

Get an 8.5” 10-bolt from a 71-72 Skylark GS. There are plenty of parts available for those, and you can put whatever gear in it that you want. They are a stout piece too.

You can take the guts from the 1971 - 1981 (4.10 ) you mentioned) trans am and put them into the 72 skylark 10 bolt 8.5 rear...BUT the stock 68-70 can only play with its own family of gears. totally different.
1968-1970 low powered LeSabre rear has the same guts also.
When I say guts I mean center section parts only NOT AXLE SHAFTS.

    436'd Skylark Sweet Fancy Moses!!!!!

The 72 will be an 8.5" you can build that to fit your needs

if you have 2 series gears you would also have to add a shim behind the ring gear or replace the carrier to install 3.42's

Fabcraft in Tx will sell you a posi rear with the 70 3.42 or 3.64 ratios installed. I think Brian or Jim can do that too.

Last I checked they were sold out of 3.42 gears but had some 3.64 gears.

They are out of everything. 342 364 buick, pontiac full size 3.55 some of the 9.3 gears sets... They usually do not run until they have enough people ordering to make another batch.... I do not like doing that to people...Sometimes you have to take a chance and just run them. I make my own 9.3 and 12 bolt olds posi units custom and I just make them as sooner or later they will sell...Just investing in the future. I do not think they have had issues selling the gears even at the price they have then pieces at. BUT if they get too much higher it will be tough for me to keep them on the shelf with out a customer pre paying... Just saying... Jim

I have a '68 A-body Pontiac rear end with a cone style posi and 3.55 gears. Will that posi fit a '70 A-body non-posi rear axle?
    Could I be that lucky?

    Thanks.

The entire rear end assemble can be installed in your Buick. The posi and gears will not fit in the Buick 8.2" rear housing. The bearings are different sizes.

Yes, complete assemble. Drum to drum no mods. Internals NO WAY. Not the same and never will retro... tried years ago. pinion to ring is on a totally different engagement.
