so whats the deal with this thing? That vapor recovery in the rear seat area really bothers me. I've never seen a 70 with that.. but the cowl tag looks good.

i hope i don't sound stupid here but where are you looking at the vapor recovery system? I see the photo of the trunk, is it the area where the wires appear to be coming out of the tube???

Vapor recovery expansion tank is behind the rear seat, upper seat cushion.
This car may have been destined for California which had its own emission requirements like today. Duane has the details on that issue.

ok i think i see it, i'm not sure i should ask what its for and how it works..possibly the californians believed it did something

Here is a pic from a 71 GS conv with the tank present behind the rear seat, upper cushion. Arrow indicates the tank.

Here is the pic from the auction with the arrow pointing where the tank is supposed to be. Notice the layout/formed metal behind the rear seat for the tank. I "think" the 70 rear clips do not have this form work unless they are destined for California. I bet Duane will show up here to give us the correct info. I have a 70 conv I am doing now and can check on the same layout...it was built in Kansas City.

Oooops, meant to say I have a 70 GS455 coupe and will try to take a pic of the rear seat support from inside the trunk to compare to this car on Ebay.

    '70 trunk picture

Here's a picture of the trunk "shelf" in my '70 GS with California emissions. The build date on my car is O5C (later than the car on ebay), and both were built in Flint. The Cal. emissions equipped cars also had a '71-'72 style washer bottle, gas tank vent and a different carbon canister. I agree with many of you who believe this car was rebodied from a '71-'72. I could be wrong but I doubt it. I would definately look this car over hard before placing a serious bid.

I just purchased the cortez gold 71 gsx that Mark Reeves restored a few years ago, it has staining on the right hand exhaust near the front of the gas tank. I haven't had the car on the hoist yet to investigate, could this have something to do with the vapour recovery system?

I have 3 70 GS's right now and have had several others, including one that was built with California emissions that was built in July 1970. None of these cars had the "tall" 71-72 style vapor recovery setup. The all had the "short" setup that fit under the bump in the forward portion of the trunk pan.

    Guys,
The pictures that Big Buford posted are from a 1970 body and are exactly the way a 70 body is supposed to look like regardless of whether it has Calif emissions or not. The top of the trunk floor is basically flat, as well as the panel behind the rear seat. If it was a 70 Calif car then the upper part of the trunk will have 2 rivit heads drilled into it and ALL the emissions are mounted UNDER the body.

The pictures that George posted are of the 1971-72 style bodies. These have a raised area at the top of the trunk pan as well as a different rear seat divider for the fuel condensation tube assembly.

From looking at the pictures of the e-bay car in question, I would have to assume it was a 71-72 body. A quick check of the body dates vs Fisher Body ID plate would probably confirm this also.

Isn't the VIN stambed somewhere on the tub like it is on the frame?

I'm new to the forum and saw the ebay add myself. Thats why I sought out this website. Lets get this guy to give the wrong info that he might not know differentiates a 70 from 71 like key code letters(J and K for 70 instead of A and B for 71). Anyone know of other little known info that could blow this guys secret wide open? The fact that the pictures are taken at the body shop is what bothers me. I bet a busted up A body near the shop has the Fisher body plate and vin number missing!

I have never seen the actual bodys stamped with a vin # I have heard behind the a/c box but never seen one on a skylark body . There usually stamped on the actual frame on drivers side..but than again there are cars that never had these #'s stamped at all.

On my 70 Skylark,a Leeds plant car,The vin was indeed stamped on the lower part of the A/C hole..I have had some other 71 cars too that was stamped, but not all of the ones I have parted did.I agree, this is unusual.

    Guys,
GSXER has a good point, it may be a clipped car.

    Duane,

That is a good possibility, but, the seller states that he used Y.O. quarters. It would be lots of work to back half a car and then still have to use repro skins on the quarters.
There is another car, not far from you, that the same mistake was made using the wrong year shell. A white one, too.
