Does anyone have or can provide a definitive location for the 70 X mirrors?? 71-72 are placed differently iirc, I have several original 71/72 sport mirror cars to measure but my X doors had been replaced
A 70 x used the 71-72 doors. So if you have that you are set, it can only go in one place. Passenger side would be a “mirror “ image.
Pretty sure that 70 had the mirrors placed differently than 71-72. Not sure if it's shown in the build manuals. Yoda would know. Might be on Georges site also.
I really don’t understand George’s explanation. Or may forgot. I know i took pictures of thread on my phone. But acceedently removed. I believe the mirrors on the 70 are closer to the fender.
http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/HowToInstallSportMirrors.htm Not sure what "70" buicks George got his measurements fro. Seeing how the only sport mirrors available in 70 were on the X
"Pretty sure that 70 had the mirrors placed differently than 71-72." I believe that is true. "Not sure if it's shown in the build manuals." It is not. The mirrors/doors were installed by Fisher Body. The assembly manuals only show what was done at Final Assembly, which was after the body shells were supplied by Fisher. "Yoda would know." I don't remember what the measurements were but believe I set my sport mirrors to the correct 70 spacing for my X-Camino. Still I would rather see someone take measurements off an original 70 door. I remember also checking this out when we did the 71 GSX. I believe the mirror placement depended on where the remote cable hole was placed on the door. That is what you would need to check for the 70 and 71-72 doors. Someone needs to contact Bill Sales (#7) and get him to measure his doors/windows. His car still has the original sheet metal. Duane
I dug into this a few years back. The 70 chrome mirror is more forward or closer to the front fender. The 70 GSX sport mirrors are located where the 71-72 sport mirrors are located, more towards the back of the door. Somewhere I have pictures..
This was a response on another thread. ME "I believe the 70 chrome mirrors are in a different location but the GSX sport mirrors are in the 71-72 sport mirror location." Dano "That's correct Nelson. On orig. Paint '70 GSX's, you can sometimes see where the '70 mirror holes were patched @ the factory (hat tip Jason Cook IIRC for pointing that out)"
I cannot find the X door picture. Both of the doors pictured are original paint. You can see the measurement of the 70 chrome with the mirror closer to the fender. The gold color is 71. .
I had a good conversation with Rich Johns on this subject and this is some of that information. There were actually three drivers doors that were available from 70-72 to first drivers door is pre drilled for the chrome mirror. The mirror location is more forward than any door factory equipped with the sport mirrors. The very early 70 door has a very poor alignment with the rear quarter at the back upper area on the rear quarter . The second door used in 70 fixed that upper rear alignment from but the mirror was still too forward for the sporty mirrors. Starting with the 70 GSX the mirror holes were moved more rearward. This door was used on the 70 GSX and all 71-72 Skylark. All of the holes on the drivers door are pre drilled guys. The holes for the screws are threaded and the hole for the cable is there. The area is reinforced. You can’t put the mirror in the wrong place. It only goes in one place. Anyone having trouble must be using a 70 door Anyone here with a 71-72 door can be the hero and get the measurement. All of my sheet metal is gone. Who is going to be the hero who has a 71/72 door? Just screw the damn thing in the hole. It doesn’t really matter. Make the passenger the same. Those weren’t drilled. Don’t use a 70 door if you want sport mirrors, find a 70-72. It’s so damn easy.
Sounds like someone needs a nap,... My only reason for even questioning the placement was I just simply remembered something being said about it over the years,..I'm well aware of how to attach a sport mirror ha,..I will get a measurement off my 72 Stage car tomorrow and post it just for good measure and future reference, it's an unmolested sport mirror car
8.5in from the gasket to the front of the door following a perpendicular line to the upper body line 5.5 in for the 70 doors
