I attempted to replace the stock unit with this one but the thread diameter is smaller. There's also an adapter of some type affixed to the block which appears to be the larger diameter as well.

I'd like to try this one next week and was curious if anyone has used this NAPA part and what they might have done regarding the thread diameter situation.

1/4npt to 1/8npt reducer pick it up at any hardware store, or parts house

Any idea what size the hole in the block is?

I feel like when I looked at it the other night it was the same diameter as the sending unit - which according to this, is much closer to a half inch.

By my calculation, I'd need a 1/2 inch npt to 1/4 inch npt to utilize the new unit.

    Am I close?

Nah 1/4in npt in the block, 1/2in NPT is HUGE.
The sending unit MAY be 1/4npt if so it will just screw in if you hole in the block is larger, someone made it larger

Thread count and separation looks like 1/8npt which would in fact measure around 1/2 in width

No, the hole in the block is 1/4 NPT, not 1/4". Most times, there is an adapter bushing from 1/4 NPT to 1/8 NPT. That looks like 1/4 NPT thread, so it may just screw into the block all by itself. Most oil pressure senders are 1/8 NPT. The two front holes in the intake manifold for the temp senders are 1/2 NPT. NPT is National Pipe Thread.

    Thanks for the explanations!

I'm hoping the new NAPA unit screws right in. Admittedly, I was in kind of a rush when I looked at it last week.

That sender is pretty accurate also. I have a mechanical gauge and the electric one stays right in line with the mechanical.
