I forgot I uploaded all those pics lol yes that is the correct 70 GS 350 hose and fit with the snorkel and none of the hoses I found curves anything like it(its like the hose twists on the engine side). This weekend I will look at the hose and where it sits in relation with the snorkel and let you know based on your previous post question as well.

Here's an NOS hose for a non-dual snorkel car (i.e Skylark). Of course hard to tell and I don't have anything to try it out on, but @ first glance it looks like it would fit better than what's available. I can post any other angles/details if need be. What do you guys think? I'm happy to lend it to someone for fitment.

I'm way off from needing one and would be leery of running a 40+ year old hose regardless. Barring someone coming up with one that fits, I'm going to look into reproducing the correct ones. I have a couple ideas on how to do it in very small batches (would prob. be lucky to ever sell 50) if I can come up with the un-vulcanized rubber tubing in the correct diameter and if Gary (or someone) would lend me an original use to make up the form. Will do some more research on it when time permits.

Looks like it would route under the ram air pocket like the original. I hope you are successful in doing a reproduction; I would definitely be interested .
I was able to make a non GS (Skylark) hose work by installing a 3 inch aluminum extension from Jegs on the thermostat housing end. The extension is functional but definitely not stock.

My hose can not be made because all the Gates hoses are now flex hoses. Mr . K thought he had one in stock but it was not there. All of his suppliers are out of hoses. He said he would stamp mine if I got a hose to work. Bought the two hoses that CARS had in stock this morning and if they fit he can stamp them. The key is that the demand has dried up so Gates stopped making them..

Dano, if you made them correctly you would be the only game in town..

I wonder what quantity it would take to get Gates to make a batch if they still have the forms. I hate to reinvent the wheel and I don't take no for an answer very well in my business wrt issues like this. Do you have the correct Gates part or can you ask Dave?
Scott, I wouldn't do it if it couldn't be done correctly. As a consumer, I'd gladly pay more (a lot more if necessary) for a correctly made repro part. I was watching what videos I could find - Making molded rubber hoses is pretty low tech and even mass produced parts appear to be made in relatively small batches and/or multiple part #'s can be made in the same batch - Which is limited by the size of the vulcanization chamber.

Dano, was looking for some similar threads on Buick Performance Club thinking someone else is chasing this same issue. I came across a forum thread on that site (old stuff 2006) where they were sourcing 455 hoses from Good Year. Maybe the author (Steve Caruso) could comment on how they contracted a limited production run of radiator hoses. He may also know if there are similar requests floating around for the GS350?!… just a thought. Here's a cut and paste from that thread:
Now available, upper and lower radiator hoses with part numbers and code letters.
1238171 YB correct for 72 455 GS cars
1234738 YD correct for all 71 thru 74 455 cars.
Both are genuine Goodyear hoses. Lower hose is $38, the upper is $42
Other new products are in development.

Here is a pic of the hose I'm currently using and the original GM ho noname.jpg se laying on top of it for reference.

On the Skylark hose I posted above, the differences are that the 1st & 2nd bends off the radiator end aren't as acute as the GS hose (1st one more so) and the 1st straight section is longer on the GS hose and the 2nd straight section is a bit shorter on the GS hose. The basic shape is the same, but, as expected, it would probably hit the air cleaner and not lay in the hook.

I tried to take a pic in more or less the same orientation. 20180625_023738.jpg

Gary, how much vertical clearance above the distributor does the hose lie? looks close from the perspective of this picture but is working for you. Can you give us the specs on this hose?
I believe you told me that your not using ram air cleaner so the question is, will this hose clear underneath the front left( drivers side) snorkel of the GS air cleaner? Thanks for addn'l info!

I went out and placed the dual snorkel on. So basically the hose I have on rides higher and tight to distributor. The drivers side snorkel does hit this hose but still will lay flat enough and work but it's definitely not perfect. The snorkel pushes the hose down some and maintained contact with it.

Thanks Gary, this helps! Appreciate your taking the time to verify any interference with the hose; this will give us another option in our tool bag if we keep things stock. If the dual snorkel /ram air pushes down on the hose, it would be about where the distributor is underneath then . I think using a 90* plug wire connector at cap to keep as flat as possible will help. Servicing the distributor may be a bit more of a challenge with this setup.... just some thoughts. Makes me think the Delco hose is worth a try also interim to any direct replacement hose in the future .
    Best wishes!

  15. this is from the gates book 1995 edition
    1970 upper hose w/dual snorkel #20689
    1970 upper w/o #20577 or 20869

20689 is discontinued but dayco #70715 is listed as a replacement which is available.

Thanks! I had asked Scott (@1970 STAGE 1) if he could try and track down the Gates number that Dave K. was using. Probably the same number you supplied. I believe I have an old Goodyear book and could find that number. I think I threw my old Dayco book away years and years ago, but will check & if so call Dayco. It would obviously be best if we could get one of the manufacturers, whoever still has the forms and would have the smallest minimum order quantity (MOQ) to make a small production run and even then it's a very limited market even if one of the reproduction Parts houses would take a few. Next best would be if one of them would sell their forms. And lastly if need be I'll look at making a few forms and what it would take to make a small production run. Hardest part I think would be getting the un-vulcanised raw extruded rubber hose. The shops that re-tread truck tires have the autoclaves for vulcanizing and I'm thinking (hoping) one of the several that I know might be willing to vulcanize a few hoses @ a time.

If anyone is interested, this is a pretty good video of how it's done. They are installing un-vulcanized hose onto the forms in preparation for going into an autoclave to be vulcanized. If you notice there are several different shapes of hoses and types that are being vulcanized on the same setup which is promising as far as making a small run if the forms for what we need could be set up that way with something else that they're already making. The 2nd video is the forms being stripped.

Dayco 70715 appears to have same specs , form shape , etc. as the other standard 350 skylark hoses we are now offered as a replacement for GS spec . If it was meant to be a
replacement for the GS option car with Ram air; I would think it would have the "goose neck" or hook shape at the end that connects to the thermostat that allows for clearance around the distributor area . Here's a picture of the 70715 that I pulled off an internet search: b0988407-8346-4a60-8783-1c0399fa4ad6_1.0cae33e910acd74e3e6b2804bfa4f38a.jpg . I'm not saying this wont work but seems to more of the same to what we have available now.

Heres another possible solution for an upper hose replacement when using the stock Ram Air cleaner that I put together this weekend. I had looked over the original GS 350 hose that Gary shows in his previous picture and how it curves around the distributor to provide access and serviceability. I decided to try and replicate the original and build a custom hose using a current option Gates 20980 (big block hose), splice in a curved 90* coolant tube connector from Summit Racing SUM-380610, and two Gates shrink to fit Power Clamps GAT 32948. I realize that this will not produce an identical replica to pass judging standard but nothing new currently available does. Here is a picture of what I ended up with and I'll follow with a few pictures to show how I put together:
    DSCN0162.JPG
This is what I started with before splicing. I had the both a big block hose and a spare Gates skylark hose that I used to find the right curves and length needed. I ended up discarding the skylark cut side and just used the cut big block pieces as the curves and length were pretty much dead on :
    IMG_0240.JPG
I cut around the masking tape marks on both hoses with the idea of spicing in the elbow tube and then check fitment between intake elbow and radiator intake. I inserted the steel elbow about 1.5 inch into the rubber on each end and rotated the hose radially to achieve desired curves. I adjusted the height of the curved hose neck above the intake to not extend above the top of the fan shroud and create a hot air pocket that would be tough to purge. Used a straight edge that matched up to height to that of original hose:
    DSCN0158.JPG
Once I had height correct and sufficient clearance to cooling fan; I installed the Gates shrink clamps with a 1500w heat gun; very easy to do and they are tight! :
    IMG_0246.JPG
I installed stock hose clamps and checked final fit before tightening. Here is passenger side view of completed hose showing routing around distributor and path to radiator:
    DSCN0164.JPG
I checked for routing under ram air cleaner front drives side pod for clearance (critical):
    DSCN0163.JPG
This custom fitted hose took me about 1/2 day and less than $50 to patch together and is pretty straight forward. I'm pretty much a shade tree mechanic and used basic tools and knowledge to set this up. Hopefully you will find this info helpful if you want to go this way as an interim solution to a parts distributor coming up with a new correct repro hose solution. If you need more/better pictures, I can probably help. Cheers!... John

    John,
I like what I see on your modifications. I agree it's an option for us. Did you consider the possibility of finding a 90 degree hose to cut to length and slip over the tube then slide the shrink to fits a little to cover the joining space up? I think that would improve the look of it all. Just a thought. Also does anyone know if we can get them made if we had enough interest?

    Nice!
    Good idea
I've been slammed @ work, plus vacation, etc. but been meaning to track down the regional Gates rep (&/or Dayco, Goodyear) and check on the possibility of having these made and if so, the MOQ.
