'70 Blower Motor Switch

    The blower switch in the dash on my '70 GS455 had a great deal of play and wouldn't work on the MAXIMUM setting, so I thought I'd try to replace it. I tried about 3 different (used) switches hoping to find one that would work...but they all had the same problem - no blower operation on MAX.

    Is it possible that the relay on the front of the A/C box could be the problem? Someone suggested that to me today. Otherwise, I'm beginning to think that there's an inherent problem with all these factory switches on the MAX setting.

    Has anyone encountered this problem before?

    More than likely it's the relay. I beleive its mounted right behind the air cleaner on the 70 w/ac. The switch is something that's about impossible to find new.

    Thanks for the reply, Mike. I was told that the relay I might need was screwed into the A/C box; however, I just looked it up in the Year One Catalog and their part # 9403N is what you describe...and I do remember seeing one of those on my firewall.

    I'll give it a try, and thanks again.

    Jamie,
    Also look at the resistor assembly that screws into the A/C box. There are a series of resistors that correspond to the blower speeds, one might be open. If its just the max speed it is probably the relay on the firewall. Good Luck.

    If all that checks out, take a look at the connecter at the rear of the passenger side valve cover (it goes to the blower resistor) 4 wires I think. I've seen the wires corrode inside and lose contact. It's hard to see unless you pull it apart. If it looks meleted it's almost a sure bet the connector is corroded.

    I'll be sure to look those things over once I get a bit deeper into the job; I'm betting it's that relay, though. I'll try that, then go deeper if need be.:Brow:

    Update

    So far, so good...I unplugged the connectors from the heater relay on the firewall and removed the relay. I scraped the terminals to be sure I was getting a good connection, hooked things back up, and tried one of my better switches. It now works on MAX; I'm going to try it again a few times before hooking the switch back up permanently.

    I've already ordered a new relay, since that seems to have been the culprit in this problem.
