70' 455 with stuck rusted piston?

I was wondering what I should do with a 70' 455 short block with Keith Black 10.5:1 pistons, and stage 1 type cam with a rusted cylinder. I have been soaking it in marvel oil and have no use for the engine now. Any suggestions?

Throw it on a pallet and ship it down towards la I'll take it... I have a set of heads and intake and exhaust manifolds for it..

It's entirely fixable if you don't force it.
The rings are usually what's stuck.
Some lovin' with a flame and quench with spray lube should help.
Next time, don't put it together with sharp edges on the pistons or you're asking for detonation troubles. :D

Is it worth my while to have a machine shop work on it, and then sell it?

Devin do you have any Kroil Penetrating oil? Or Free All? They work great on rusted, stuck stuff.

I wouldn't think it's worth it to pay a place to free it up or dismantle it so you could hope to break even selling it...
But what they would do is similar to what I've said.
Heat and expansion with good penetrating oil works fantastic, even a squirt of diesel fuel lit on fire would help free it up.
Sometimes a wood block on top of the piston with an air chisel to vibrate it, if you feel like being thorough.
Attempt to work the crank slowly and carefully and you should be good.
Cleaning can be the most profitable area of the shop.

Regarding selling it, the new owner will have to go through it and possibly hone one cylinder, if scotchbrite doesn't clean it up. It's definitely worth better price than a core.

Regarding any sharp edges in the combustion chamber, they are a great place to initiate detonation or pre-ignition (death) in a situation where the performance strategy means being on the edge of pump gas capability.

[QUOTE- Devin do you have any Kroil Penetrating oil? Or Free All? They work great on rusted, stuck stuff.]. YES!!!! Kroil is The Best By Far. I’m sure there are a number of penetrating oils out there that do a good job, But Kroil is the Best!! Mark

Mark I just though Kroil was the best on rusty stuff until my little brother put a can of free all in my hands.

Thanks for the info. I have a lot of rust in my near future so I’ll get some and give it a try. I’m always up for giving products a try. I’ve never had a situation that Kroil wasn’t able to free up. Kroils logo is “the oil that creeps”. I’ve used a number of penetrating oils that freed up something that “kinda stuck”. But on the really Really bad rusted parts that others didn’t get free Kroil got it done. It really only takes a little, you don’t have to soak the part. I’d recommend putting it on the part ahead of time and give it ample time to do its job. P.S. I really like this forum. I learn so much from all of its members! Thanks. Mark

As a manufacturer I have a mindset towards using the raw ingredients rather than high profit consumerist hyperbole.
Most end users and shops state that acetone/ (ATF or PS fluid) blows away Kroilaid, although it works better than most off the shelf products a homeowner has access to.
I can attest that even a propane torch frees pistons better than that.
This is a mildy rusted cylinder.
    Piece of cake.

You are at a point in which selling it as is might be the best use of your time...for what it will bring in.

I've seen a simple test where the fellow screws on nut on bolts, so the are flush at the end, then put them standing on the bolt head with the nut up, and then fills the little grove where bolt and nut meets with various products.. Kroil, wd40 and so on, and the last one is 50/50 atf/acetone.. After 10 min or so he pulls all the nuts off again, to see how far the products has creep, and the atf/acetone is superior..

This is from the top of my head, many years ago I saw it..

Honestly if you put a propane torch to the piston top right now and let whatever was in there flame off, get it good and hot until smoking pretty hard...and then dropped more penetrant in as it cools, the engine would probably turn with a bar.
It's the heat expansion and sucking in the oil that does it.
We had one to two guys in a plant doing nothing but tearing down about 150-200 heads a day.
Not sure how many in the block plant.
