"the all chrome are for radios with fader..they are shorter because for the fader mechanism" I don't know that that is the case here. I think both the fader and non-fader pieces are exactly the same length. And it certainly would not work on the other side that does not change length. Duane
The knobs on my '68 AM-FM w/Fader are shorter without the black ends. I have a pair with the black extensions I though were off an old '68 Special but they may have been off my 71 Skylark, bot had AM radios. The AM/FM is original to my car. I checked the 1968 Chassis and Body Parts book and it only lists one knob with or without fader, for all body styles. It does not show the knob though.
OK, We have the question solved and it looks like I had the knobs completely backwards. According to the 68-72 assembly manuals the knobs were as follows; 1968 Part number 138640 (Quantity 2) 1969-1972 Part number 1231081 (Quantity 2) and the change over took place on 5/27/68 ...........so that would mean that the very tail end of the 68 model year would have come with the newer style knobs. From what everyone is posting here, that would mean that the 68 cars came with the short all Chrome shaft knobs and the 69-72 cars came with the longer Chrome/with black spacer knobs. Learn something new everyday. I will check to see what I have in stock and see if I have what I need. Thanks for the help everyone. Duane
That makes sense; my ‘68 had what I presume are original knobs (were on an AM, now on an AM/FM) and they’re almost too close to the Tone and Fader rings. It’s hard to turn them without moving the rings. I bet the black extension was an improvement. Patrick
Most of my knobs/tone/fader rings are up at Nick's shop. I only had a few left at home. Once I see what I have I will post the 68's I have for sale/swap. It's better to get them to the people that need them then have them sit on a shelf forever. Duane
my '68 was built the 3rd week of April 1968 and has the short knobs so it makes sense with what you are posting.
Thanks to James Weinman I have the correct knobs for the car. He sent them a while ago so we are good. Duane
From the '69 Factory Engine Book, just in case you want to be insanely factory correct Have a few drinks and pretend its a Monday at the factory to go over the top when painting. Good start with the cap on the water outlet and inlet.
That's a video of the engine on the dyno during a pull. I have been trying to post that up for a while, and finally gave up. Brian was good enough to do it for me and I thank him for doing it. Mike, I can tell you this much, that intake is not getting painted. Duane
