Should a THM400 in a 1968 GS400 be painted or clear coated or left natural? I am about to put mine in for a go through and while it is out I thought I would take care of looks.

When new, they were natural aluminum.

Have the case glass beaded then take a propane torch and close the poors, it will darken and smooth from the heat, a hot tank will do the same

Would a clear coat work to keep it looking good?

This is just me but I would never paint, clear coat or epoxy a trans unless you are using it for show and have mirrors under the car. The case is porous aluminium cast and and very efficient at dispersing heat........the number 1 killer of a auto transmission.

Cannot do the glass bead thing but will clean it as good as possible. Will look better then as opposed to now.
