If you want it, it's worth it, but I don't think you would get a return on it if you had to sell it. The 350 does hurt it. Low teens probably? Hard to say without knowing its details. Tony

Al - I say, If you want it and can swing it, get it !!

YOU alone know how much work YOU put into it and how FINE it is. If you think/know you CAN NOT find another in that shape, then its worth the extra couple of thousand

....I went and looked at 1 of 77 this past summer - a 69 Stage1 Convert 4-speed. Guy wanted 15K .... it was prolly worth 10K if that and I walked.

Most likely, For the rest of eternity I'll be kicking myself over 5K and never having owned the pinnacle of "69" GS's :spank:

As far as condition, its one of the nicest 68 I've ever seen. All the car is original and unrestored. Its never had rust panel replacement and was in great condition but the paint was faded and the driver's seat needed repair. So I had it professionally repainted and did not remove the factory wood grain. I had all the stainless polished and the bumpers are original and perfect! The part that really bothers me is the guy I sold it to told me if he would ever resell it I would be told first, well he sold it to a another person and now this guy is selling it, AL.

    68 Sportwagon How Much

I got a call back on my old 68 Sportwagon the other night. I'm going to ride out and see her for its been a long time. If the the car is is in excellent condition as when I sold it how much should I offer to get back? Here are the plus and minus on the Sportwagon......Plus---all orignal, new museum grade correct paint, new 400 transmission, posi, Gardener daul exhaust, rare red and platium combo, no rust, pampered since new (garage kept), has A/C, 60K-70K mile on it. The minus---350-2 barrel, no 3rd seat, rear has small gears, needs the interior spare tire cover and other side as well recovered (still has the NOS materal I bought with the car), I think the present ower spent some money on the car like adding power brakes, 15" buick chrome wheels and red line radial coker tires. Paul and Lynn and Bill Lagna seen this car when I had it and it is very nice but I'm not made of money and need you guys to help me put a price on it. Thanks in advance! :beer AL.

Well Al - it looks like this car really wants YOU to own it as it keeps getting bounced back into your lap.

We both know what # this guy has been looking ro get for what ?? 2 years now ?? and it isn't happening. Im not saying it isn't worth it ... but obviously he hasn't found someone willing to pay it.

It all depends on how much you want (or need) the Wagon. I think its a Bitchin' ride. I like the fact that it doesn't have the 3rd seat. As you said a BigBlock would be nice ... and its certainly do-able without really ruining any value ... its not like your chopping it up in any way or couldn't drop the 350 back in later.

The real question is what do YOU think its worth and how much of a difference is there from that to what he's askink or willing to take ?? You also have to "let go" of the price in your head of what you sold it for - it was a different world then.

Back then you could have had your pick of REALLY NICE restored or original GSX's for 40-50K. How many of those guys that sold at that price would kill to get their car back for the same $$$$ now ??

Alan, thanks for your reply! :beer He said he had calls on ti put no one came by (probably out of state lookers) The market in down right now and he said he wanted to pay some bills. He commented that I saw the only one that kept after interest in this car. I think Paul and Lynn said he was looking for 18K and you say 3/4 of that? AL.

Well, here is the e-mail I got from the owner.........

    Al.

I think I sent all the pictures in many E-Mails, I had a very hard time, your computer would not accept the big files, now I'm at the point that I had so much come back, I don't know what you got., anyway, The price of the car is $15,000, and right now that is a firm price, I would like to sell the car, but it's not a necessity.

If $15,000 is not what you want to pay, or your not ready to buy right now, It would be better that you hold off till spring to look at it, because even through it's at my house, it is in storage, and unless someone wants the car now, I will not be starting it, or driving it, before spring.
( it's a major job to get that car out, it puts a lot of bad fumes up into my house, which I then have to ventilate the whole house, that's OK on a 70 degree day, but it does not work in the winter or on a hot summer day, that is the biggest reason it's for sale ) also I will not hold it, it's first come, first serve.

I've seen it listed on websites for $16,500. Value or worth are pretty much out the window since so very few change hands. Personally, I would think 10k and work your way up from there if you have the scratch.

Like I said, its been listed for at least a few years now ....

Good Luck Wagon Buddy - Im crying I sold mine but I have other "things" in mind for the next few years. Plus I know where a few are tucked away If I ever get that itch again.

Alan, every time I see my old Sportwagon I think of your GS :beer . Alan your really on the ball on 68 69 car :TU: . Thanks so much for tracking my old car :beer . I can swing it but the wife is now keen on it but she will need to get over it if I skike a deal. These old orignals are great investments if you buy them right like my 68 Corvette for $2000.00 :eek2:. I will be on this and see where it goes. I plan to ride down to see it in person ASAP, Thanks Again Alan :TU: :beer , AL.

Do you all think $12000.00 would be a fair offer or you all think we are to far apart on the price, he wants $15,000.00, what do you all think? AL.

I say offer him a straight up trade for the vette
    :puzzled:
but seriously....offer him the twelve and see where it goes. If he is stuck on that 15 number sick an appraiser (that you pay for) on him to get the appraised value, he might blink and drop the price then.

    D.

Beth says give us the number and we'll start moving on it :Brow:

Beth, he has tried to get 16K for it for a few years now and still has it :puzzled: . I have an idea that I'm going to use your plan with an appraiser, Thanks, AL.

I didn't get a lot of feedback on this one as I hoped, do you all think $12K is a reasonable offer for a nice 68 350 Sportwagon or is this a "low ball" offer that will anger the seller? AL.

    Al,
If he's been asking 16K for a few years now & still has it... that's telling you something..... he's asking to much. 15k might be a little high too... BUT I have never seen the wagon in person - you have.

It sounds to me that you in your heart of hearts thinks it is worth 12k - so offer him that. The worst he can say is no.

If you are ment to have the wagon back it will come to you, you & the owner will figure it out.

Beth, thanks for your super follow up :TU: :beer . As far as condition I'm the one who did the frame on restoration on a very nice garage kept original and it has been the best 68 original Sportwagon I've seen out there. Thanks so much for your help on this and will go with what you recommended. I will be going to see my old Sportwagon in a week or so and make an offer. Thanks Again :beer Friends like you make this hobby what it is :beer :TU: AL.

Wow what a gorgeous wagon, i can tell you this from experience wagons are getting hotter by the minute, no longer are they the old family hauler. now days its cool to have a sweet wagon, If hes asking 16k start low you can always go up but ya cant go down. start at 12k and let him haggle with you.
Either way its a gorgeous wagon and If you can afford it i wouldnt let it get away, they dont make em like that anymore. they're gonna get harder and harder to find, and you know what you have there as you did the work.

    Good luck with it.
